have an intermitent proplem that i cant seem to trace. problem started shortly after changing alternator. driving along, speedo dies and abs/tc lights come on. can stay like that for 30 seconds or 1.5 hours. then speedo starts working and abs/tc lights go out. cant work out why this has only started the same day i changed the alternator. dont know if it helps but i changed all discs and pads about 3 weeks ago. any help greatly appreciated. many thanks

Can you measure the voltage across the battery with ignition off.
Now, measure the voltage across the battery with the car running, possible over-voltage (alternator rectifier)...

Had this on the old miggy ... abs ecu is in the process of failing :(
There is a "how to" on how to change it ...
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152729807
VX wanted £700+ for a new ECU :( .. I got mine repaired by bba reman for £130 including courier fees on a 5 day turn around ... I was VERY impressed with their service.
Advantage of having yours repaired is it does not then need the tech2 treatment :y :y

Give them a ring on 01634 687222 and have a chat .. could save you loads of dosh !! :)

This could be indicative of the ABS ECU going. If you have cruise control does that also stop working.? I hope it isn't as it is quite a fiddly job to do. Do a search on the forum on how to change them/get them refurbished etc.
In the meantime well worthwhile trying all the other suggestions people will make.

Agree with above, having had same symptoms on my car, I'd say there's a high probability that the ABS ECU is failing. Not good I'm afraid, as apart from the cost of repair, the pump/ECU assembly is difficult to get to. Six small screws will drive you nuts!

But is more then doable with a bit of patience :y

cars only done 51k miles. surely the abs ecu sshouldnt be on its way out.
-
Definately abs ecu packing up. Contols abs, tc, speedo, cruise and speed sensitive power steering.
Options - recon bba as Entwood above OR
get used off breaker for exactly same year and model spec as yours.
I went down used route with Estate and all worked ok 1st time without need for Tech2!
It is an rsol of a job to do - need lots of patience to get all 6 screws out and usually 4/5 (5 in my case) back in!
Good luck

Have you checked voltages?
-
Yeah, abs ecu. Can be refurbed for 125 quid, but bit of a bitch to remove/refit

it seems to be common with 99-01 cars, we have seen a lot of them....
Mine was exactly the same, ABS ECU was the cure.....

and mine ::)

My facelift car is the same year and engine as yours. The same thing happened to mine about 3 years ago. I checked the ABS ECU part number with vauxhall and then found one from a breakers. Think I paid £40. Mine actually came from a 1999 pre-facelift. Had it fitted by a local garage for two hours labour and it has been just fine ever since.

You got all 6 back in? I take my hat off to you. ::) After getting 5 back in and getting p*ssed of with the sixth (bottom right looking from front) i thought b*llox can't see that the last one is absolutely necessary! No probs to date :y

Ah yes but I didn't say how many days, pints of beer or swearing it took!! The secret (if that is what it can be called) is to have a range of different length extn bars and fitments and loosely fasten it on with a bit of sticky tape.

thanks for all advice, now thoroughly scared at prospect of changing faulty unit. sounds like a big job. might leave it for a while until we get some better weather and i got plenty of spare time. might as well do cam cover gaskets at same time.

Used magnetic torx bars + mini ratchet - completed mine start to finish in a few hours. Wasn't prepared to spend longer on last (unneccessary) bolt - anyway had back-ache as well!! ;)

not trying to hijack the thread but on the subject of TC faults, my 98 Omega will light the TC warning if i am a bit to eager with my right foot in the wet, sometimes it will just flash (think its supposed to) other times it will stay on till i restart.
ABS, speedo and cruise work just fine even when the light is on, any idea's ????

I got all six in too, and it was easier than taking them out, although still a pig of a job. Having the right tools is half the answer, and that takes a lot of thinking about. I hope I never have to do it again.
