hi, just had my EML flashing on now again done the paper clip test and got a code 89, O2 sensor 2 open circuit. is that the lamda sensor and is it hard to remove? thanks

Yep, it's the Lamda. There are two of them. One on each exhaust downpipe. Drive car up on ramps. Disconnect cable and unscrew the body. If you are lucky it will come out easy. I'm not sure whether '2' is left or right side. Someone here will know

thanks for replying, i was gonna get the sensor from autovaux, but they have 2 sensors but with different length cable one 570mm long and one 950 mm long which says is for ecotec engines. Also like MarkG said which side would be sensor 2. Also since the error code came up theres more of a hissing from the plenum area, ive looked and can see nothing wrong., i was wondering if the lamda sensor going has been the cause of the odd pinking ive been having.

A hissing from the plenum could be an air/vaccuum leak, which can affect the lamda readings anyway :(. and might be the cause of the pinking. I'd try and sort the leak first.. might make the problem dissapear.

One way of pinpointing an air leak is to lightly and slowly spray carb cleaner around the area, if the engine note changes as the carb cleaner is sucked in you have found the leak.

Im starting to wonder if VX replaced the O rings to the plenum when they did the Rocker gaskets as ive had trouble ever since. They also broke a HT lead in the process, so i had a misfire when i drove it back. They put on the worksheet new HT leads required. If i wasnt for my now lack of of place to work on the car i would of done them myself. I suppose thats main dealers for u. ::) :(

Code 89 is a faulty lambda sensor on the passenger side downpipe.

Just unbolts and the connector unplugs. But... can be very tight and because of the sensor shape you can't get a socket on it (well actually there is a special type of scoket you can buy just for this application).

IIRC you need a 19mm spanner and a good soaking with penetrating oil. Don't think the genuine sensors from Vx are too expensive. My was £50 from www.gendan.co.uk.

Having said that you could be getting a false code if you have an air leak at the exhaust manifold or manifold to downpipe gasket.

21mm spanner for lambdas ! best way to get them out is take front pipe off altogether and spray plus gas down the pipe so it gets on lambda then go make a cup of tea then undo working it in and out saves stripping threads !! :y

thanks for all ur replies, VX wanted £143 for the sensor  :o, i ordered one from Autovaux. I hope that one will be ok.
