I dont know of any home test, might be worth swapping with one from a scrappy or similar to see if it cures the problem. :-/

Have you checked the plug wells for water/oil?

yes no oil or water in the wells but ive got no spark on the 1st plug (nearest the dis pac) and the 4th (nearest the cams) ive checked for water in all connections as i wash jetwashing it today but was careful not to go across the top of the engine dis pack area  :'(

try swapping a good lead onto bad cylinder if it will reach and see if it sparks. If it sparks no1 lead buggerd. If not chance dis pac. While your in there, you may want to clean the idle control valve and breathers if you havent already. Wont hurt to clean cam sensor and do a paper clip test. Hth

That is exactly the symptoms, with lumpy acceleration till higher revs, I had, replaced the rocker gasket, as oil in plug holes, new plugs and leads, still a missfire.
Fitted a new coil pack, bought from ebay, and all is fine.
Not too difcult a job if you have skinny arms and hands. ::)

Had similar problems with mine.Very lumpy and had no acceleration, but no EML .Had replaced all leads and plugs about 3 months before..managade to get a replacement from JueV6 and now runs a treat.Just be carefull as disppack comes in 3 types with different plug connecter..oval/rectangularon end /rectangular on side but that seems to be for older<97 models.

I think the engine may have been originally intended for (and used in) a transverse location. (calibra) :-/
