Title: slush box fill hole
Post by: osealy on 12 September 2008, 16:04:56
No not porn post!
Just fitted new rad but cannot see fill hole for gearbox, drivers side?
The atf that came out was brown/black. 150K and changing perfectly.
I guess I should change it.

General Advice is change at 100k, along with the filter.

Surprised if its the original box, the TD was de-tuned for the Omega, and the standard AutoBox fitted usually dies at around 120k.

ATF fill plug is drivers side, front section of the box. 13mm nut i think

yes drivers side to the rear of the large sump about 60 mil up from the base. Its a level hole so bear in mind there will be a fair bit of oil below it, meaning the hole will be high up on the side of the sump but not above the gaskit. I think its a 13 mil? bolt iirc with a copper crush washer.
With those miles i'd be serviceing that box atf, every 60k, both sumps off, 6 or so litres of dexron 3 a large and small sump gaskit and clean or replace filter depending on condition, clean magnet.  Dont let vx tell you its a sealed unit or to use any other oil. Also a guide in maintenance section re topping up. Hth.

As I believe its a messy job. Any thoughts on pumping out the oil thru the fill hole , then replacing it.

I would vote 100k over 60k personally for gearbox oil...

Well the plug is towards the front... ish  ::)

except that its on the rear sump, on the side.. ;D ;)

I think if the car has done motorway miles, with no towing etc, 100k is probably ok,   but if it was my car from new I would be erring on the side of caution , and if unknown history would do it anyway.

If you manage to do that, let us know how, it would
save alot of mess as you say. Usually its just a case of carefully taking off the sumps and then very, very carefully spilling it all over your head.  ;D

On the subject of when to service, i think in your case its immaterial as yours needs doing now asap anyway, but...
I started a similar thread on the subject and the consensus by others was 60k iirc(which a quite possibly dont, as my Altzhimers is def. getting worse) This tallyed up with my own car, which i bought with 70k on the clock full vxsh and was not moving off in reverse when i released the brake.
Several members replyed 60k, i think without me mentioning the car mileage. And i do remember seeing mention of 60k in a guide of some sort which i now cant find of course. Anyone have a definitive answer?

IIRC, even VX suggest 60K fluid and filter changes for vehicles operated in "extreme conditions*".
