Title: Auto gearbox query
Post by: Welung666 on 13 September 2008, 11:34:50
I'm watching a car on FleaBay and wondered if anyone knew what would cause this sort of fault...

'The gear box is needing fixed, been told a diagnostics machine should do it rather than it being replaced, It just gives a shudder when going through a gear change from 1 to 2 and put a small warning light on the dashboard, however it has never caused me any problems.'

Cheers folks

Lee

Plugging in a dignostic test will not fix a gearbox fault. All it will tell you is what fault code stored is. From experience I would budget on a box being required, hence why car is being sold. You can pick one up from about £30 and upwards. Main thing is knowing it is good prior to buying it, so testing donor car is important or at least knowing its history is.

I think MutantCav has a couple going spare...

The amount of people that think everything can be fixable by a computer...if you have a punt at it, budget on a new box and fitting it ASAP.  The problem might be fixable for £50 (Thrust Washer/oil & filter change), but assume it needs a box.

only asked as diesels run a weeker box and fail early anyway, so you may consider any pending failure "normal".
However a petrol does not have this issue, although "most" auto box issues can be sorted with an atf change, if this fails to rectify the likely fix is a new box as said. You should budget at least 170 to diy by the time youve fitted and serviced with new atf. But remember these are forum prices, and will rely on a friendly breaker on here parting with an ar35 box. Hth.

As stated I have an AR35 auto box or 4 here (possibly soon to be 3 if Tim continues his streak of back luck lol) £100 collected, probably about £50 on top to deliver...
