Hi Guys - not quite an Omega question!
Maria doesn't mind me posting this, because we have been after some information (or help!) for a while, and just wondered on the offchance if anyone knew of anything available. The situation is this.
Maria has an (almost) 12 year old daughter, who suffers from dyspraxia. She is physically perfectly able, but suffers from a (reasonably mild) lack of co-ordination, and some more notcable behavioural problems. Maria is her full time carer. It's fair to say that, taking her anywhere is extremely stresful.
Maria has been unwell for a little while, and is also very stressed out. She NEEDS a break, even if it's only a short one.
Problem is, neither of us have any family, or trusted friends, that could provide us with some childcare, even for three nights.
Question - does anyone know of anything available that could help? Possibly an organisation that specialises in this sort of thing?
Money is not an issue, we just need two or three nights away together, sooner the better...

Try contacting your local social services, they may be able to help or point you in the right direction :y

MikeDundee has it just right. Contact social services. We have been fostering children for about 7 years now and occasionally take children who are in short term care for just this sort of problem.
If Maria's daughter has dyspraxia, which I don't think is diagnosed as that these days, then she should have a social worker anyway.
Check out Cardiff Social Services (http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=2867%2C2904%2C4626&parent_directory_id=2865&positioning_article_id=&language=&sortkey=).

Thanks for the link sir golf buddy, i haven't got a social worker and no one seams to want to help me, Hannah has been dyspraxic from the age of seven but the school she was in kept her a yr behind every yr, so they new that she was not normal like her others peers , and in the end they said she needed a special school, i was with children with disability team but they did'nt help much, they only listen to me when i was so stressed out that was back in cambridge 2 yrs and since i have been back here in cardiff no one will help me, which is very wrong i think, i'll let you know how i get one when i ring cardiff social services and see if they can help me, because i know i should have help with hannah......

You're entitled to a lot more than you get....
I think a re-evaluation/diagnosis of her condition, (docs appt) may be in order, to determine exactly what level of help is out there.
Might seem strange, us sharing issues such as this, but the level of knowledge and the nature of the community here means it can be really helpful, cheers guys :y
Anyhow, it's past my bedtime, time for some shut eye. I'll be back tonight, like a bad penny :y

http://www.carersuk.org/Information/Helpwithcaring/Takingabreak
If what you want isn't there ... ask them .. !!

There is also the Government help site
http://www.carers.gov.uk/grantguidance.htm

she is in a special school steve....

Right. Sorry I cant be of more help then. Maureen is a headteacher in a mainstream school and was going to give you some advice on how to take this forward.
However, she still feels that the school should be your first port of call, as they have the facilities to access multi-agency support if they think it is necessary.
You must make a strong case for yourself and, if you are not coping, tell them this. They are duty bound to help if they can.
Steve.

Hi, my wife and I have been caring for our son, who is both physically and mentally handicapped, for the last thirty six years. We get six weeks respite care a year for him, we also get a sitting service every Saturday night, paid for by social services and the Independant Living Fund, he also attends a day centre five days a week. We have to contribute a small amount to these services, but well worth it. My long winded point is that everything we recieve we have had to fight for tooth and nail, you will get nowhere without involving the social services, even then it is usually a fight to drag each concession out of them. My wife gets approx Ģ47 a week for providing care 24hrs a day, seven days a week, which we would do anyway for free, but at the last estimate if he was in permanent care the cost would be upwards of Ģ560 a week to the state. All I can say is good luck, and don't give up fighting, and don't let the beaurocrats get you down!
