Title: 3.0ltr top end rattle.
Post by: The Red Baron on 13 September 2008, 17:06:09
my elite has quite a noisy top end, on listening to it on tickover today, tha rattle moves around...it can be o/s front then n/s rear, then o/s rear then n/s front :-?. i would have thought that if the lifters were buggered then the noise would be constant. its def not the injectors. any idea`s please. thanks. jon.  :y

had similar on mine when i got it. But only on left side. The oil had not been changed for over a year. Oil and filter change sorted it. When was yours last done?
If its running on the top level on the dip stick and has had a recent  oil and filt. change with 10w 40 semi synth then maybe look for an oil pressure problem/blocked oil pick up pipe perhaps?

i was thinking it could be a oil pressure prob, it had oil & filter change not long back but is constantly being topped up as the cam covers leak.

Is it possible the cam covers are blowing a "raspberry" as the crank case pressure is released through the seal between c. cover and head? Is that the noise your hearing? Try holding the cam covers down and see if that influences the noise its not unheard of for the cover bolts to come loose, they are only 8nm tight.

ps you will have to unblock the breathers and re do the cam cover seals to stop the covers leaking,  as this will bugger up all sorts if left, if it has not already.  It would be nice to know what the rattle is before you replace the cam cover seal so that any work on the head can be done while the covers are off.

its def a clunky/rattle, remember the 4pot ford ohc engines, sounds like that when the cam was worn. but its odd, as i said the noise isnt constant it seems to move around. wierd. engine runs well enough though. :-/
