Title: Auto Gear Selector Switch
Post by: gwa on 20 September 2008, 16:30:12
I'm trying to remove the switch to inspect and clean or replace. I've managed to undo the nut an 2 bolts to remove the switch but am unable to remove the other end of the wires from the body of the car. I managed to get the plug out from the other side, its the other bit thats connected to the switch that won't ease off. Any clues/suggestions?  :-[  :(

What exactly do you mean by "other end of wires". Just renewed switch on my 2.0ltr found it was just a case of unclipping the multi-plug, undoing the two bolts, removing the nut from the actuator arm and off it came

Ah, thats the terminology 'multi plug'. Theres a small part to it and the larger part is wired to the switch. Thats the bit that won't come off the body so that I can strip the switch down, it almost seems as if its screwed on or something. Thanks

Bend the lug and the switch should release. When you open the switch body you might find it full of oil and crud. Clean it with a "Brasso" type cleaner or electrical switch spray. :y

I've got it as far as the switch is hanging down. Is the multi plug 2 or 3 parts? i.e. a double bit socket in the middle of 2 plugs.

When you`ve got it out check that the nylon bush with the two flat shoulders is in one piece. That was my problem. If all seems ok, prior to refitting if you check my original post there are guides as to the correct alignment of the indents on the nylon bush. :)

Huh, thats an understatement!! The 2 main contacts are very tarnished, 1 of the five small contacts is actually broken, so I'm surprised it ever worked. Theres the white crud but enough grit for your average bird cage, but funnily enough the nylon bush is OK its just the rest of it thats bu$$ered. Anyway Markey Mark has a good one thats now coming my way.

Many thanks for all your help

The OOF strikes again  :y :y :y :y :y :y
