Title: Cold Start Rattle
Post by: puffa on 19 September 2008, 09:30:28
Ok here goes,, i have a problem,, since returning from my hols in Yorkshire every the car starts with its normal roar every morning, however as soon as you touch the throttle there is a rattle coming from the engine bay,, if you leave the car to idle for a minute or two she roars in the normal fashion,, it only does it the first time she is started and is fine all day long its just the first start of the day I have changed Oil to GM 10w40, and Oil filter (GM part) last weekend but rattle is still there,, it would seem that the oil is not getting up top quick enough, can anyone guide me as to where to look first,, is it a feeder pipe that may be blocked or something else...

I am sure the rattle is not healthy and need to sort it asap

Steve

if there are no warning lights my estimation is about classical problems..

Air leak is very common..

Oxidation in sockets also can be a problem..

And Did you changed normal service items..?

And with rattle, you mean engine not working properly like shaking ?

if you are talking about weird noises on startup  ,an old SAI pump also causes  that..

deffo not exhaust heat shields? roughly under the seats are heatshields that have a tendancy to rattle.  Big jubillee clip tightened round them shuts em up.
not really an engine bay noise though  :-/

If its more of a ticking noise, could be exhaust manifold gasket blowing?

Have you ever changed exhaust manifold gasket ?

does sound like the gaskets, my 2.5 does the same when cold, can hardly hear it when warmed up.

would the gaskets sound like an unhealthy rattle or more of a ticking noise though,, this really does sound mechanical ???

"Tappets" :question - had this on mine rattled for 30 secs then went.  Cured after oil changes.

sounds like a rattle from the hydraulic lifters, maybe a sticky lifter, you can get some additive that you put in engine that can help free of lifter if sticking, have you got the right viscocity oil in engine, this can contribute to the problem if wrong.

Does sound somehwat lifter related.

The antibleed lifters can loose oil if left compressed for some time (i.e. a fw wekeks with a cam pressing against them).

This normaly recovers reasonably quickly but, a few spirited revvings work well to get them full again.

Hi ,in mine 2.0 16v ,the noise (for 20 or 30 sec) you describe as ' it only does it the first time she is started and is fine all day long its just the first start of the day ' ,the problem was the secundary air pump with some wather inside !
She's now in the scraap ...
Sorry the bad Inglish

yea.....agree with jimmas...i have the same...changed oil - 10  40 semi synthetic - changed oil filter, but gave it an oil flush (all this recomended by my local vauxhall dealer) - it may cure it straight away but however may take a few oil changes - mine is better but still slight noise on cold start in mornings. - will change and flush oil again in about 2 or 3000 miles. - good luck with yours

I  change oil every 6 months using GM parts and 10w40 oil,, what flush would people recommend for flushing through, also is there any additives that may benefit if added to the oil???
