Title: Soft touch switches
Post by: markrl on 29 September 2008, 22:19:31
Has anybody found a way to easily remove the soft finish coating on the interior centre switch panel switches? The finish on these things really is a joke in terms of practical durability. Just holding or touching the switch cover is enough to start it peeling making the interior look tatty like an old minicab. Underneath this quick peel finish it seems to have a perfectly good shiny black finish if only you could easily get off the clear rubber yuk that’s been applied over the top. Anybody managed to successfully remove the joke finish?  >:(

if having problems most people replace them with a set of the buttons that dont have the coating on; a 'hard' touch set of switches. these then match the ecc buttons and other bits too.

i have a set spare if you're interested, pm me for details  :y

As said, best way is to replace where possible with the older style buttons that in my opinion looked better anyway and are far more durable!

Thanks for the replies chaps pm sent to ilovemyelite. This peeling soft touch finish problem seems to have also aflicted Volkswagen who have apparently stopped applying it due to the high number of US warranty claims

With mine the whole centre console is peeling too as it has the same finish. Is there a version of this without the coating?

Those heater controls are readily available at most of the ebay Omega chop shops (never knew they had the soft touch covering but perhaps it was added to the later models).

Heres one with a free radio

Bit steep that one and I'd have to buy the remaining buttons seperate, thanks though I'll keep looking.

Not too fond of walnut either but thanks for the reply.

If anyone reads this and has one like mine going give me a shout!

The damage would appear to be (mostly) caused by fingernails and rings.

Not what I would call a durable finish.

Only you can't get a small TC button in old style ;)

I supposed long fingernails on women, but how would rings do it?

If you've got the soft touch ones as pictured without the peeling how much are you looking for? Let me know! I've just asked markey mark for the hard ones but I may as well get them too and keep them aside until a hard fascia comes along.

In the mean time I have to let it idle to see if the AC is on as the bulb is gone!

Fingernails, rings and people going: "ooh, is that finish peeling? Oh, yes, it is"
