Title: Poss HG failure
Post by: razzo on 29 September 2008, 15:43:49
can anyone advise me on what else look for re poss HG failure, had the car up on a ramp & is leaking coolant heavily just below exhaust manifold on the drivers side. Mechanic said as there was no leak above manifold & no visible leaks elsewhere so he thought HG was to blame

May be the heater bypass valve (HBV) .... :-/

When the head gasket went on mine ( was only a 2 ltr though ) it pressurised the cooling system causing coolant to blow out expansion tank and i could see the bubbles coming into the tank aswell as smelling like the exhaust ...when my hbv went it was dripping down behind the gearbox on the driverside .... i know yours is not the same engine as mine but hopefully it helps you a bit  ...... im sure there will be someone with experience of you engine along soon :y :

Hmmm, is it at rear, or down side of block?

As all the above answers, as well as the following flow chart...

Not saying 100% either way, just an addition to the reasoning process...   :y

Replaced HBV with a know good one so ruled that out, pipe work seems ok, the leak is on the side of the head towards the rear just above the starter & only showed itself when he pressurised the system using a pump on the header tank. It only seems to leak when engine at or near operating temp & there does not seem to be any loss in performance

Took the car to a garage today & after much tooing & frowing he reckons the engine block has gone porous causing the leak, never heard of this before so anyone else come across this. I am wondering if there are any core plugs at the back of the drivers side head where it butts up to the breather box, anyone have a pic?, anyone help as i am tearing out what little hair i have left (can count them all on one hand now)

Anyone ???  :'( :(

Let me see.....a porous cast iron block......wwas he smoking anything?

Thing is, at the back of the drivers side head you have:

A lot of rubber coolant pipes
Heater bypass valve
Coolant bridge
Coolant pipe

It needs the scuttle and inlet etc removing and the coolant system pressurising to see where its coming from

compression test can give ideas about engine condition but not in the same place (mechanic)

iirc you have made one of these out of an old header tank cap, if so any advice on how to make one up ?
