Title: car knocks when going over bumps
Post by: Miggy24 on 01 October 2008, 10:56:36
Hi all well my car has been knocking about 2 weeks after i got the car but as the exhaust was bogged up i thought it was just that.I looked under the car to sort it out as its starting to get really bad.I thought i found what it was making the noise two brackets hitting eachother so i just welded them together and looked proper job. When down the road and over a few speed bumps and still the same so i pulled over and had alittle look and pused the body up and down a few times on each cornor when i got to the f/n/s it was knocking and sounded like a footpump blowing air in to it so im just wondering if its the front shock that packed up couseing the nosie  :y

It probably is not this but I once had that type of serious 'knock' on a brand new 1979 Ford Cortina 1.6L Estate.............it turned out to be loose bolts on the prop shaft connections, which both I and the garage were amazed at. :o :o :o  It could have been deadly! >:(

So as I say probably not your particular problem, but worth checking?? :-? :-?

VERY unlikely to be shocks!

If you don't believe me, remove the one on the knocking side!

Do as Mark suggests. Easy to remove and a damn sight cheaper than front shocks :)

What take out the drop link then see if it still makes a noise

Yes, remove the link, two nuts, then drive it to see if the knock has gone. If so renew both, about £20-22 pair :)

do the drop links first........for the sake of a few quid it all helps to 'tighten' the steering/suspension  :y :y

Can someone help me.  I have just replaced drop links on mine.  old ones were shot.  I still have a knocking on rough ground.  Yesterday it went for its mot.  The place I took it too know the car and have even got a bar on all the wishbones etc and there is no play in any of the bushes.  The car went through its test on everything with a advisory on slight corrosion on one pipe.   Any ideas of where to look definately on front, no  wandering on the steering or tyre wear.  It even did it going onto the brake rollers.

Cheers
Addy

Er no, he was wrong, the shocks are not (and very rarely are) the cause of the knocking noise  :y

Remember, it makes no odds where they work because they all come through the same college programs, modern mechanics are nothing but fitters and sadly not up to the standard they were 30 years ago  ;)

I must agree with Marks DTM technicians these days are just fitters, they do what the computer say's and unfortunatley it is sometimes wrong, if not all the time, if the shocks are leaking then that would make it an mot failure, therefore it can't be the shock's.
Start looking at all the bolts and nuts they may have come loose (or not). Have you checked and tightened the drop link nuts to the right torque setting? How old are the wishbones on the car? Have you changed them or who you bought the from had them changed if so do you have proof? Also have the top mount shock bearings been replaced?

Hi,
I took my Mega for it's MOT yesterday, failed :'( on both centre exhaust sections(ordered a pair from eternalcar after reading JamesV6CDX thread,£79.90 delivered :)), o/s headlamp not giving correct light image(got a pair of projectors to fit) and # plate bulb(sure it was ok before MOT :-/).

In keeping with the present thread advisories were both front struts have slight movement at top attachment(found when lifting wheel with bar).
Is this due to worn top mounts or can this be adjusted out in some way? There is no knocking or bumping from the front end when driven.
