Hi,
I bought a new Key(without transponder)from the Forum shop for my 96 Elite and today took it to a key cutter to have it copied having already asking if they copy car keys, yes being the answer :)and was told that he couldn't do it but even if he could it would have to be chipped.
By chipped i take it he meant Transponder chip? i told him that my key isn't the type with the chip, anyway he was adamant that it would have to be chipped before copying :-?.
Can anyone let me know the procedure for having a key(without transponder)copied?
Thanks,
Pete :y.

Got my one (new blank with new unprogged transponder chip) off ebay and got local tame locksmith to laser cut to my other one FOC. Worked doors, ignition ok. TB progged the chip with Tech2. Starts car now - kept as spare.
My guy just copied the key - presence or not of chip immaterial - key cutting/copying is a mechanical process!

Thanks dbug, i thought he wasn't sure what he was on about :).

Yup

Just ask them to cut the key.
He is correct, if you have RF type remote (as opposed to IR type), you will need transponder chip programmed to your car.

im a mobile manager for timpsons m8. a key without a chip can be cut as long as they or u have the blank. it wouldnt need a chip if the origional doesnt have one....
he was prob a trainee a lot of them dont know what there on about..... :y

Thanks lads,
As i said i bought the non-transponder blank key from the Forum shop so no problem with the key :).
Jamie which one is the one without the little dome on the sunroof motor cover?
Cheers,

Without dome is RF, so key needs transponder. Transponder needs programming to car, and this requires a Carpass (and a tech2!)

Or working transponder from other key taped to immobiliser ECU :-X
But not recommended, as you have then prevented immobiliser doing its job
-
Two separate issues here.
The 'transponder' is an IC chip which slots into the key mouldings, it 'talks' to the immobiliser which has to be programmed to accept the code transmitted by the transponder. If it is not recognised by the immobiliser then you cant start the engine.
Second aspect is the remote door locking, the body computer has to be programmed to accept the new remote transmitter.

Hi Jamie,
I think i've got this Transponder/Non-Transponder key thing all wrong. You say that no dome is RF and so needs Transponder and Programming, well mine is RF then which means i should have a Transponder type key :-?.
What does the chip look like when you open the key, if it's a small rectangular bit in the lower left space in the key looking at it with the blade to the left then it looks like i've got a Transponder key in which case i purchased the wrong key from the Forum shop :'(.

has your car got a dome in the roof?
-
No dome Dean.
-
it is not infrared and too technical for my help. its the same as mine which cost me £22 for pass card from vauxhall and £70 for a new key and programming from my local locksmith.

Thanks Dean :y.
