After fitting Deiseldeans replacement engine in the tractor, it started 1st time deep joy....
once all the fuel filters and bits were replace and refitted... looks the part.
ticks over 650prm, revs no prob go to drive it and it's dead.
pre intercooler pipe expands when revving post intercooler expands also. so the turbo is working.
If you try to drive it it won't rev.
then remembered sommat TB had mentioned while I was visiting his. Disconnected the MAF and away she goes, pulls like a train.
reconnect it and dead again.
any ideas whould be appreciated

Thye dont.....its a BMW unit, they rarely put a light on fault or not!

Thanks for the call TB and MarkDTM.
I'll check what you suggested Mark, Then it's off to TB's if that doesn't cure it, to try the 2nd MAF and tech2, Plus I have to return the tractor locking pin set.

Out of interest what effect does the MAF have & what problems are caused by it's disconnection?
Do I have one (Oct 96)?

The MAF does very little on the tractor!
Its effectively nothing more than an antismoke device so it ensures there is not more fuel being injected than there is air to burn with.
It operates mostly at peek revs (as you would expect) but, say a hose is off then it will limit power much lower down.
Disconnecting it will throw a fault and result in it basicly working as normal.....it doesn't always throw a fault light either but, thats BMW maketing for you!

maf never brings on eml - I'm always forgetting to plug mine in!
As said, Jue, we can compare data read from yours to mine, plus also test my maf on yours to help pinpoint.
The turbo pipes expanding, that causes a bit of lag. A cable tie every inch prevents it...

be nice with that engine mate cos its been nursed like a baby. it never done more than 3000 between service and in return never drinks oil apart from the usual weep from rocker cover gasket. if it runs in that car like it did my old car then you will get 40+mpg just knocking about.

How does anyone achieve this sort of figure??
The best I get is 33mpg (Calculated not via a MID 'cos I don't have one)

I'm getting low 30s at moment. But then, I have a significant smell of diesel from it currently, so guessing its sprung a leak :(

My average was always about 33-34 mpg however I drove the car. Since having the ECU done, its now a minimum of 40-41mpg when I'm driving like a maniac and 50ish when I'm granny shifting.
It just seems that 120bhp (std) with a 1800kg car makes for crap economy. :(

on work run my old car did 45-47. same run in my newer car only gets 31-35.

There must be a way of improving economy on an Auto without chipping given the spread of mpgs being obtained??

start by fitting a manual box ;)

Never did understand whay anyone would want to waste energy changing gear manually & playing tunes on a gearbox!! ;)
