Title: Started stalled then wouldn't start again.
Post by: Dusty on 07 October 2008, 16:28:53
Had an odd problem today.

Started up my 2.6 miggy. Idles for a couple of seconds, then there was an audible "ping" (from where I don't know), then the engine cuts out and will not start again, depsite the battery turning over the engine quickly.

Took the key out tried again, and then it started as usual. There was also the audible "ping" again.

Tried it a couple of times after that and all seems fine.

Does anyone know the cause of this, is it something to do with the key/recognition/immobiliser?

Thanks Dusty  :-* :-*

With any V6 not starting my first point of call would be the crank sensor, got a code reader?

being a 2.6 you can't paper clip it.

You can buy "cheapo tech2" kits off ebay, which run off a laptop, it comes with a cable to which connects underneath the steering column.

This will read the error codes stored on the engine ECU.

I strongly suspect crank sensor, when was it last changed?

Not sure if it has ever been changed or not.The car is 2001

Is a tech 2 or crank sensor expensive. :-* :-*

Throttle and brake pedal down. Ignition on position II. Read the codes :)

it explains what is mean't by "reading the codes" , "paperclip test" and "pedal trick"...  you should then be able to tell us the info ..  :y :y :y

Yes thanks for that. I have just sent Mr Dusty out in the cold, to try the pedal trick. He says the car with the spanner through it, flashes continuously.

Which seems to be no codes. What does this mean? And does it help me with my initial problem?

It means there are no stored or pending codes .. so the ECU thinks everything is OK ... which is partially good news .. but doesn't instantly help with your problem !!

Sounds to me like a relay might be failing to hold in, might be worth trying listen and see which one. Relays are in the fuse box by your knees, and in the triangular shaped box by the battery. If you can detect which one is making the noise it might help.

A different car I know but still a Vauxhall. I tried the pedal trick on SWMBO's Aastra G and that did the same ..... just continuously flashed. So I unplugged a few things in turn temp sensor cam ( or was it crank? :-/) sensor, and the EML just flashed continuously.  :y
