Title: paperclip test on 1994 2.0l? nowt happening.
Post by: Elizabeth_Parrott on 03 October 2008, 16:11:21
I have watched the video, read the info, got my paperclip and poked it in but when I moved the key (didnt run the car) no lights flashed at all, does this mean there are no faults or what?  It didnt even do the 1-2 flashing thing. Am I just plain stupid?  :-/ ;D

Stupid never, unlucky maybe !
Make sure you have put the paper clip in the right holes and that the metal terminal hasnt pushed back inside the connector (age and abuse can loosen them)
Also whats the problem with your MIG ?

I've a couple niggles withthe old thing.  Until 2 years ago it was very well looked after but maintenance was not kept up and it was left to stand for two years.  For the past 6 months I have been discovering this the IACV seems to be knacked, done all cleaning and asssociated stuff but before I have to replace it I wanted to try the paperclip test to check for anything else(engine only, the interior is near showroom and all works except Ive got no radio code) Oh and the rear drivers light.

Where are you putting the paperclip?? Its pins 4 and 6 on the v6 prefacelifts (pin 1 being top right and moving down from there)

if it's the 2.0 16v then from memory it was a bit of a bugger to get the paperclip in right... you need to pull it out then push it back in a couple if times and try and get it all the way in.. i forget if it was pins 4+6 or 5+6 tbh also im not sure if i put the paperclip in with the ignition on or off- its a bit of trial and error

Both pins 4+6 and 5+6 work.  I use a bit of solder to short the pins fits in a bit better.  Turn the ignition onto position 2 and it should flash the codes.  I take the engine management light does work - i.e when you turn the ignition on to position 2 the EML comes on (without paperclip in)?

I take it EML is the picture of an engine with a shape on it?  If so then no it does not light up at all, now how do I sort that out?

Sounds like it needs the bulb replacing/fitting. Have a read here:

[Thanks for the info, I also found the video very helpful in showing how to remove the vents with the butter knives. I'm starting to understand my car more and I like it! ;Dquote author=Mark link=1223046681/0#8 date=1223294868]Sounds like it needs the bulb replacing/fitting. Have a read here:
