Title: Help With Wayward Front Wheel
Post by: MutantCav on 09 October 2008, 11:14:17
Ok, got an Omega to strip...engines knackered but matters not...so nice straight wheels, push it off the drive round a sharp 90 degree bend and behind the car to drag it home...get round the corner once its hooked up and suddenly it starts to squeeel as I'm towing it along...check and it seems one of the front wheels has decided to turn in a different direction to the other...very odd...so I'm literally dragging the front of the car!!!

I'm guesing a bolt has fallen out of the the steering or suspension somewhere and something has worked its way loose, any thoughts what?? Just need to get it 50 miles home...

Towing it is melting the tyre with the heat...can always drive a mile or two then stop while the tyre cools down again and I'm sure it would get home, but obviously if I can straighten the wheels then its a much easier job! lol

Cheers, Chris.

If its come out...what size bolt do Imneed to take with me to get it back in place...also where is it located, whats it look like and how easy to get to when jacked up?

And if its failed, any way to repair temporarily roadside to get it home?

Probably obvious but it was dark by then so no way to see and no tools on me at the time...should be easier with all my tools and daylight!!

Not sure I'd be happy towing a car on the road in that state. If the track rods have been disconnected who knows what else might have been done to it?

Daylight certainly helps when solving a problem...had a look around under the car, nothing disconnected, all seemed ok then...ahhhh that much be the track rod...the bent thing...seems in my haste to get away as dark was looming I hooked the strap to the track rod rather than the back of the wishbone...DOH!!!

So a big bar and a bit of bending roughly back in shape and the wheel was straight...er and got back safely...although the tyre blew about 4 miles out so had to stick the spare on...at least I know what a track rod is now, and where the ends are lol
