Hello i am after some help please ::)i was driving my omega last night and all of a sudden a loud knocking sound started coming from the car,so i opened the bonnet and it appears to be coming from behind the cambelt casing at the top as you can feel it vibrating like hell :oi was 10miles from home on a dual carriageway at 7pm so i risked driving it home(as i had the kids with me) but it seemed fine, just the terrible sound!! Any ideas please??? ;) :y

from what youve said i would want to check that cam belt. Dont drive the car until rectified. Might cost you your top end.

i have ordered a cambelt kit today just to be on the safe side and i am going to buy the disc also but do you need a cam locking tool to change them or can it be done without???if i need one can you rent these from tool hire companys???
if it costs too much i might scrap :'( as i have had my car since june and it has cost me a fortune on replacing interior(twice),cam cover gaskets, head gasket!!!and it now needs a new exhaust, front and rear discs as the front are warped, chrome trip on back bumper and rear passenger door moulding as when you open the front passenger door it catches on the trim and it is now bent back and sticking out :-X

I wonder if the cambelt was done properly when the head gasket was changed ... might be the cause of the problem ??

Well, in the old days "tapping" noises were caused by the tappets being out of adjustment, and I reckon a cam that is faulty could cause a louder sound than this.
But "knocking" as you describe was usually down to 'big end' failure, which would get worse as the oil thinned with heating and the metal expanded likewise as the large bearing oscillated on the crank shaft, or worse still seperated completely from it due to rod / bearing failure. :'( :'( :'( :'( However, I am led to believe that in this age it is very rare for big ends to fail as they once did, with the bearing shells and piston rods etc being manufactured to higher specifications. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I'm getting confused ...

That is no where near valves, big ends etc etc .... if the noise is from behind the cam belt cover .. check the items behind that cover .... ??? you know .. tensioners etc etc ???
or am I too simple ??? :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

But it was stated Entwood that the belt etc is fine, and knowing how sounds can seem to come from all parts of the engine unless you use a sounding pipe..........who knows without seeing it for ones self, but the decription is a "loud knocking sound....coming from the car" with it "viabrating like hell" which is far more than the slapping of a cam belt. Therefore the cams / cam shaft or worse are a possibility if all else is discarded. ::) ::) ::) ::) ;)
Only trying to help the guy! :D :D ;) ;)

Oil level ok? Louder on one side than the other?
Can you confirm how you know the cambelt setup is ok - have you stripped it down, checked all idlers?
-
A complete punt - but could it be a loose exhaust manifold?
