Hi Ian.

Presuming you have 50% antifreeze in your water? If you don't have any antifreeze, the radiator can freeze up during driving and stop circulation.

TB diagnosed a faulty fan switch on mine the other day. Keeping the aircon on forces the fans to run low speed - this keeps the temp down quite a bit. Otherwise they never get the signal to switch on.

Were you in traffic or driving along - or what???

Sounds like you boiled up to me. Not much that would do that AFAIK. While you are looking tomorrow, I would suggest:
Run it up and make sure the fans kick in by 95 deg.
Check the oil filler for mayo. If the oil cooler seals have gone there could be enough mayo in cooling system to block it.
Head gaskets are not a weak spot but you could take the water filler cap off while it is warming up. A slow rise and fall in level could point to a break between the combustion chamber and a water channel.

Where did the water get out? Its a pressureised system, as most are. That water wont just vanish unless its leaked, THEN it may well boil over. Was the water bottle cap on securely? Or as dbug says, number 1 cause of water loss is heater by pass valve
leaking, or a leak in the v of the engine. Dont panic tho. loads of info on here and usually cheap to sort if you diy. Fill it back up and see if you can see where the leak is coming from. Usually start by looking under the car where the gear box meats the engine.
2 bolts 4 inches apart, usually drips off there.
