Title: Gearbox advice
Post by: Kieran on 31 October 2008, 09:45:16
Hello all.I have a 2.6 2001 cdx estate and i believe the gearbox on this is sealed and no oil change is needed. The thing is it has done 115000 miles and i use it for towing quite  a bit. The changes are still smooth but i would like to do an oil change if possible or am ijust wasting my time :-/.Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks

you aint wasting your time as its not only the atf that is worth changing but the filter is worth changing or cleaning also, there are loads of threads on how to tackle this but it can be messy as there is no drain plug on the box :(

Well worth changing the fluid and filter by now. There's a chap who sells the filter and sump gaskets in the back of straight 6 news if you're a member of autobahnstormers.

As said, draining the box is by removing the sumps whereby the fluid goes everywhere.

Opie oils are a good source of Dexron III in the right sort of quantities. Fuchs Titan 4000 is recommended. 10 litres will give you plenty for a change (6-7 litres required) with some left for topping up.

I find a garden spray with a bent bit of 8mm pipe stuck in the end makes for easier filling when you've got a lot of fluid to add. This can be used to flush the fluid cooler pipework with clean fluid too.

You could use a garden potting up tray to catch the oil in. I've had mine years and it is useful for all sorts. They are about £12 and are green ,a yard by a yard approx with a rolled lip. Fairly easy to clean afterwards too being plastic.

Another use is to put tools and parts on to drag around the floor as you work on the car.

Not sure how much you know about the Omega, however please take note of what the more informed members suggest. Autobahnstormers is a forum that offers members a 'Trade Club' discount card, costs £20 to join, worth ever penny, there magazine 'Straight Six' has a member that offers 'auto box filter and gaskets' for £30. Vauxhall suggest 80k for fluid change. It does make a difference, please only use Dexron 3.
