plastic tab on the right infront of the socket, remove the ash bit, then a screw behind, some brisk acceleration and it will fall into your lap :D

If I remember correctly, there are three screws in a facelift.

To remove the whole ashtray mechanism hinges and all is a single screw. To see the screw remove the pull out bit that you empty, then look straight back in the middle.

I did take it out when removing the whole centre panel but I don't think anything else was needed to get the ashtray out.

Many thanks guys. You are all right re the screws, there are 3 screws holding in the back plate, but you can get it out if you just release the centre one.
I've now got a funny hooked bit about 2.54cm long that should go somewhere. I wonder where ?. ;D ;D ;D

Aha, thats it. That hook fits onto the back on a spigot with a smal hair spring keeping it pointing forward. I refitted it and it now hooks nicely.

Many thanks all, this job has only taken me about 3 months to do  ;D ;D ;D
