Title: What is up with this 2.2 DTi then?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 15 November 2008, 15:58:31
I'm looking at buying a 2.2 DTi as a project, if it goes for the right Money. It's a Y reg, Estate, low miles. Spares or repairs, description as follows:

"last week the seals let go on the turbo drawing oil into the cylinders and pretty much ruining the engine. I have spoken to a vauxhall mechanic and he told me the engine would need to be taken apart to see the true extent of the damage, it might be repairable, it might not. However if you are going to bid on this car, you should have it in mind that it may need a new engine."

Any opinions guys? It's local enough, if the price is right  ::)

If a diesel gets a good oil supply it will over rev!

I suppose it depends on how much oil has been sucked into the cylinders, I dont know if its possible, but if enough got in there, then I suppose it could of bent conrods ect

You reckon it's revved the nuts off it and blown it up?

How easy is the chain setup on these to remove and replace, when considering head removal?

What do you think the extent of the damage is?

Unfortunately I know little about the diesel, so I'd like to have a go and learn, if it's salvagable...

i fixed a few of these wen i worked for a taxi company, it was funny because the drivers wud all do the same thing, turn the key off and then when it sat there still reving flat out they wud run away! one of them left the car reving out and ran a mile back to the office!  ;D anyway we always just put a new or second hand turbo on them, thrashed them round for a day then gave them back to the driver, never had any trouble when they used to do it, same with a few pugs and skodas that did it to,

How hard is the turbo to change?

not sure on the omega as it was ony vectra 2.2 and 2.0  but not to bad at all as i remeber, just a basic turbo change really oil feed and return off then down pipe and boost pipes, then all the manifold nuts, the car shud still start and tick over with sum fresh oil in, they tend to start to suck oil again if u rev them over 2 grand, if it does just make sure youve got it in 3rd or 4th with ya foot on the brake and just stall it, also some times all the oil goin thru exhaust knackers the cat so u should budget for a cat to be on safe side

That's that happened to a mate of mine on a Peugeot tractor IIRC. Started burning engine oil on the motorway giving a kind of cruise control effect but with a bit more smoke. He pulled off the motorway, pushed the clutch and it revved up, so he tried to stall it, burnt the clutch out. Pullled out the ignition key, no difference. It revved its' nuts off until, it ran out of oil and siezed. Density of the smoke closed the M3 for a while. :o New engine, gearbox, clutch required.

Not saying it will be this bad, but be prepared to have to drop a new lump in, depending on how clued up the guy at the wheel was when it happened.
