looks like the rocker cover gaskets have been sealed shut by the previous owner - looks a possibility that they wont come off straight so anyone got an idea how much these cost if they need replacing?
its in for cam belt, rocker cover gaskets and breather clean out. also needed a idler gear? which had to be ordered today - whats one of them?
-
Probably the only reason you would ever need to replace cam covers is indeed if they have been seriously over tightened...I can send you a couple of v6 cam covers for £20 next day delivery if you need them...
Idler gear...Idle Air Control Valve?? EGR???
-
I replaced both my cam covers recently as sure the last (mechanic???)who worked on mine had white knuckle syndrome and must have distorted them as could never cure the leaking.
Bought a new pair from VX which included the gaskets but not the "O" ring seals ..if I remember correctly they were about £60=00 ish a side on TC,but it did cure the leak so I suppose it was money well spent.

idler gear was summat to do with not being part of the cambelt kit?
the cam covers maybe a problem due to someone using sealant and he is struggling to get them off without bending them.
I'll see what he says in the morning and i may have them off you

mutant cav - are you about 2moro or could i get a phone number in case i have to ring you during the day?
-
Will be removing an engine in the morning but will be about from around lunchtime but can pm you my mobile number if for any reason I'm not :)
-
yes that would be good mate - what do you want to do about payment if i take these off you 2moro?
-
Paypal?
-
the idler is most likely the aux belt tensioner pulley :y
-
ah right thanks!
mutant - paypal is good idea - wasnt thinking ! i'll let you know in about an hour or 2

If its black sealant or silicone it should come off with some pursuaion/knife blade etc, although cleaning it up afterwards will be fiddly. However if he did it like that its a fair bet the cover was overtorqued as well and so may well be damaged.
I think Autovaux Wakefield do the GM covers inc seals at a decent price, maybe worth a call.
The idler ie either the aux belt pulley, or the tensioner/idlers that should come in a proper cambelt kit. (Remember the cambelt idler/tensioner all needs replacing as it is most often the bearings that fail). The aux belt pulley is not mandatory depending on condition.

well it all got finished but it has an air leak from the EGR valve gasket so i still dont have the car back -
i need a car cos the mrs is in and out of the labour ward as the baby cant make its mind up if its gonna come or not, so they lent me a suzuki balero! its horrible but at least i can get to the hospital -
cost me £9.45 to insure till tuesday midnight!
-
er.....they should not have been near any gasketed part of the EGR valve.
-
apparantly they had the manifold off?
