Title: My Facelift - LPG (DIY) Conversion has begun!
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 05 November 2007, 19:08:52
Fuel is now at over £1 a litre average where I live, and if I get this new job I will be doing a LOT of miles. I want to keep the meega, and the only way I can do this now is with LPG. So we've made a start.

Yesterday - all measurements were taken in the boot area, and holes drilled. The tank is now mounted, and fully secured in the boot. As you can see, it doesn't take up that much boot space - this is a 70 litre tank:

Holes drilled in boot floor for tank strap securing bolts:

Where the LPG filler and feed join the tank valve:

I've not yet fitted the filler, because I'm in the process of cleaning it up and spraying it Star Silver, so it's colour coded like everything else on the car. The filler will be mounted in the bumper.

One of more holes still need to be drilled in the boot. For A) The filler to tank (8mm) copper pipe, and B) The 6mm tank to engine bay pipe. Looking at this, I think the best route is down through the boot floor on the drivers side, and follow the exact same route as the fuel pipes to the engine bay.

As far as mounting the tank is concerned, if you are clever about it, there is no need to remove the petrol tank, or the exhaust, to get the bolts in and torqued up. I've got locking nuts on the bottom of my straps, to stop them working loose over time.

Updates to follow - but I don't plan to lose any time now, so progress should be fast!

Excellent progress :y

That tank looks like it allows some clearance to put long objects in the boot with the seats folded down too. Won't be shifting any pianos, obviously, but for the odd length of pipe / wood from the DIY shop it looks OK.

Actually... Did you happen to notice where the tank ends up relative to the pre-marked holes for the towbar?

Just wondering if the towbar is going to scupper my plans?

I very much doubt it will - as the donor car that the tank was removed from also had a towbar...

Good work James  :y

Maybe too late now......but if you had removed the carpet of the boot before putting the tank in.....you could have put the carpet back afterwards and routed it up over the tank.....so it hides it.....if you see what i mean  :y

I did it this way on purpose - I don't really want the tank hidden :y

Tow bar - you need to fit one before the tank as the front bolts are underneath it - so no worries.

There is a sweet spot where nothing needs moving, my tank would hit something if it was fractionally out of place.

Anyway James remember where I am

Cheers Martin. I might pop up for a visit when a little more is done - if only to show you the progress etc. Will also get you to look over it, before we send it up to bernard :)

Do you want to follow my pipe route?

Did I show you how I got past the jacking point?

My towbar is a removable one so it's got the metalwork on the boot floor. Looking at it, I doubt it would get in the way, though.

Can you remember where your mounting holes were relative to the crossmember behind the diff, james?

well done James.....

i did my filler neck on the weekend, there isn't a great deal of space and i only just got it right as well, it doesnt touch the body but another 10/15mm either way and i would have been looking for a new bumper....

colour coding makes it look that much better

I saw a car on eBay once where he'd fitted the filler behind a hinged number plate - like various old Fords & Hillmans - just an idea. ;)  ;)

Is there anything on that tank to identify it, James? Manufacturer name and part no? Just wanted to know its' dimensions.

Cheers,

Kevin
