I have a 51 plate omega 2.6 v6 CDX auto.
Last night all the gear slector lights came on when I down shifted from 'D' down to 3, 2 to slow down approaching a junction.
The lights went off after a while and the car drove home fine.
Gearbox sounds fine, engine too?
The next morning I started the car, all the gear selector lights came on, the 'TC' light remained on and could not be turned off manually, and the car crawled when I selected 'D'. I stopped the car, turned off then on again and selected 'D'. This time only the light for 'D' was on (as I had selected 'D') and the car pulled away just fine?
I left the car in 'D' the entire 8 mile journey to work with no problems at all. However, when I got back in the car after work and started up again all selector light came on again. I had to turn off the car again and restart until only the light for 'D' was on when selected.
Again, the car drove home without any problems?
Please can anyone give me some assistance. I have read some where here that it could be as simple as a 'switch' that might need cleaning, or perhaps replaced?
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
Kent.

If all the leds came on, its the selector switch.
-
Could you tell me where to locate the switch?
In addition, is it simply a case of cleaning it up, or do you think replacing it is best? If so, how much do you think it could cost £££?
Many thanks,
Kent.

bolted to side of box. bloody expensive new. try for a good 2nd hand one

any idea how to clean the selector switch when i get it off ????????
when opened there will probably be a load of white crud and if like mine even some grit. Carefully wipe the excess then get a small dish spray the switch cleaner (Maplins) into it put the bits into and leave to soak for an hour or so. Then carefully wipe clean. In mine, one of the brass contacts had actually broken, hence a replacement. Be careful you don't stretch the rubber gasket when cleaning. Any excess switch cleaner will evaporate without residue unlike WD40.

And if you need a replacement I have a good one here :) And its bolted onto the passengers side of the gearbox...
-
And if its anything like mine to remove, then its a right ba$tard and make sure you do it when the exhaust pipes are cold. :y
-
Spent friday night doing mine. The top nut securing the switch is towards the front of the car, and is a right pain to get at, so much so that I haven't put the bolt back in yet having reassembled it.
You will need torx bit to open up the case on the switch.
Also, the switch is wired into a plug which is clipped to a bracket (again, a .... to get to). In order to remove the plug from the clip (so that you can lower it to a point where you can unplug it), tap the connection towards the front of the car. I had to resort to just tugging it until the clip snapped, as it isnt obvious how it's held on ::)
My switch (2.0 gls - 100k miles) cleaned up and went back on, and appears to work now. Tht's probably cursed it. :-/
P.S - why were you downshifting in an auto? :-?
-
As always, I like to save money where I can. I find that to reduce speed (if coming to a junction) I can do either of the following:-
1, slam on the brakes - and wear out the pads / disks.
or
2, Down shift from 'Drive' to 3rd, then 2nd when down to about 30 MPH or lower.
I believe in making the engine help to assist in stopping by using the gear box to be a little more cost effective thus, spreading out the cost of pads / disks to last as long as practicably possible?
After all, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd gears on an auto are used for what else???
-
slowing down on hills :P ?

Towing caravans, long steep descents on hills, emergencies, flood water, certain "spirited" driving...
Regular use of them is only going to wear out the selector switch, and possibly the engine and gearbox.
I can't really see why taking ones foot off the accelerator 500yds earlier isn't adequate :-/ I never brake hard except in emergencies anyway.
Besides which, pads cost naff all.
Your car, your way of driving. Just seems odd to me :)
-
Perhaps I should have elaborated a bit more.
I was indeed refering to junctions situated at the bottom of a hill etc.
Obviously on a flat I agree that taking your foot off the gas and slowing down with decreased momentum is the normal approach, as this too is my normal way of driving.
I don't own a caravan, horse box or any other towing device! Therefore, I am not familiar in using gears 1,2, or 3 for these purposes other than for using them when heading down a decent towards a junction.
I think that covers it? Thanks for the info.

or just hit the sport mode button for extra engine breaking, rarely use the other manual gears in all honesty as i dont tow anything, at the moment...soon to change, and no, not pikey related.

Down shifting to get engine braking also has another affect....it helps fuel consumption because the engine goes into an over run condition and shuts the injectors off :y

few pics wihich might help

I tend to downshift in the auto if I'm 'spirited' as anything to help the brakes - esp across Milton Keynes ::), but also to ensure a good exit gear.
I do not do it for fuel economy... ...in fact, I don't ever really do anything for fuel economy ;D
-
So is the switch itself actually servicible?

I'm have quite the same problem with my Suprema (Omega A Caravan/Estate).
Check if your transmission is the 4L30E. It's quite faulty, but not bad to fix. Buy a rebuilding kit, change seals, clean stuff, look at clogged filter, check/clean valves.. and so. I'm about to do this in mine, i found some bare material to start with. :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/
Good news. Rarely it gets FUBAR'ed... But it's not very easy to fix yourself/find affordable good professional (at least where i live). >:( >:( >:(
Check the internet for this trans. It's used in a large variety of vehicles/makers, such as Opel/Vauxhall (duh!), GM trucks, Isuzu, BMW, Suzuki, Toyota, Bimmer and some others.
HTH! :-?

We should be so lucky .... I assume you're on main land Europe somewhere because the UK never had the option of a 4.0 litre Omega A/Carlton. This forum is predomanantly V6 Omega B based.
Are you a member of Autobahnstomers (http://www.autobahnstormers.org/)? There's a lot of straight 6 knowledege there ...... aswell as Omegaforum members ;D ;D :y :y

Uh-oh... No bud... I don't mean four liter engine...:) the "4L" means, for the trans maker "4-speed in line", like "3L" is the code for 3-speed. Check the GM parts (do a search fo "4L30E transmission" in google).
My very own car has a 3.0 line engine. It's the Opel engine. Here in Brazil, we also had a 4.1 Liter engine, for about 3 or 4 years, from a car named "GM Opala" (portuguese word for "Opal" -> said to be a cross of Opel + Impala - american car). This engine came from a truck line named "C-60/70" (12 tons I think), and equipped the pick-up trucks until these days, when such pickups came with diesels, then they ceased production.
It's a monster engine, very powerful at low rpm and it used to blow many of the 4L30E gear boxes, because of the torque... It was a carb-ed engine and the guys at lotus made the adjusts for (motronic?) mpfi. Check this:
opala engine: 6cyl, 4.1L ->http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4329/motor6cc2zx7.jpg
my car looks like this: http://djjaragua.vilabol.uol.com.br/suprema.jpg
omega engine: 6cyl, 4.1L -> http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/8283/sudatsrn8.jpg
this was the last opala made: http://djjaragua.vilabol.uol.com.br/opaladiplomata.jpg
Great car the opala... I have a opala caravan 1982, 2.5L 4-cyl, carb, 5speed. Good car... cheap to keep, simple mechanics, cost 10x less than omega to keep running... ::) ::) ::)
back to the topic... :)
The transmission was also used in BMW, which went up to about 2.5liter -6cyl engines and 350Nmax... to the american market, it's a common transmission there, you can buy kits quite inexpensively to rebuild such trains.
Whoa! Hope this lights, rather than mess your brains! ::)

Hey, no need to go too far... I found this "laying" around... :P

Do a Search for selector switch and it'll bring up everything you need.

don't tell anyone.. i was thinking this gearbox had some critter inside.. no clue about numbers, letters and not even thought that it is not that hard do fix... that is. not easy, but if you can read the instructions...
my car wasn't idling... i never knew before what a idle sensor did, what was, WHICH thing under the hood was it (i never knew there was such a thing... in carb you adjust 2 screws and you're done). I took take thing off, cleaned, then MAGIC! the car is no more crazy... and idles like a clock...
looks like the guys put these ugly names and myths around cars in order to keep you away from under the car... and buy a new one next year, after everything starts to melt and you don't have a clue from where to start (and your mechanic doesn't help either)...
Funny (or not): in portuguese the word for "tinker" is "mexer", it has the sound of "mesh" + "er" > The word for "mechanic" is "mecanico".
When you want to say a guy a "tinker of a mechanic", one who can't find a seed in a watermelon, we call them "mechanicos" (meshaneecos). The best tool for finding "mechanicos" here is a broken Omega... They will reveal themselves too soon! :D :D :D :D :D
