Title: Alarm and New Key - NEWBIE questions!
Post by: Dennis on 20 November 2008, 12:03:02
Hi all

I have looked through the archives but not 100% sure of the answers to my questions so apologies if people end up repeating what they have said in the past.

I have just got my 2001 CDX 2.6 auto and have to say its a great car to drive and loving it!

Just 2 questions, first I wonder where the best place is to get a new key or 2 as the ones I have at the moment are pretty mashed in the button department and so thought a treat of a new key may be best?

2nd question/problem. My car has been on my dads drive for a week or so and has been fine, but when I got it home to my house last night I suffered with the alarm going off every few minutes and ended up locking from the inside. So wondered if there was a way (other than taking to a dealer) to find out why its going off or just to stop it doing it?

I understand there is an internal switch I could use to turn off the inside sensors but would I need to do this everytime I got out the car?

Please treat me as a complete idiot when giving advice, cos what may seem obvious to you guys may seem double dutch to me  :D

Thanks in advance for any help  :y

The best solution to the key problem would be to send a PM to Martin Imber on here. He provides a service replacing the buttons in the keys. If the keys are otherwise in good condition that will be by far the best option.

There are a couple of possible culprits for unreliable alarms. First thing to try is to unplug the bonnet switch and see if it's still troublesome. Second most likely is the power sounder which is under the scuttle panel behind the driver's side front suspension turret. These become troublesome when the internal batteries die. Again, it can be just unplugged for a test.

If you're near one of us who has a Tech 2 (see below) the Tech 2 can read codes from the alarm system and tell you exactly why it's playing up.

Hi, if your keyfobs are working but just cosmetically damaged then you can usually get the cases on a well known auction site. just search for "omega remote" or "omega fob"

The alarm issues can be one of a few things, first is to make sure you dont have any magic trees hanging from the rear view mirror, as when the car moves in the wind the trees (or other airfreshners) can move triggering the sensors which are integrated into the rear view light.

Secondly if you dont have the above, look under the bonnet and beside the power steering reservoir there will be a switch that is pushed down by the bonnet. try disconnecting this and see if you have any more problems.

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for the help so far, I will test the bonnet switch this weekend and see if that sorts it out, if not I will be back!

Also, thanks for the key fob ideas, the fob is fine and all works well so its just the cosmetics on the buttons......a popular bidding site, here I come  ;)

We hope you will be back anyway :D

A new key needs to be programmed to car via Tech2. Dealers charge a fortune for this.  I have some Tech2's scattered around the country, and can normally provide key blanks and transponders, but not the remote fob.  The cheapest option if you are near one of my Tech2's (see my signature below) would be to buy the correct remote fob from ebay, and blank key/transponder from OOF shop (http://shop.omegaowners.com), and see one of the Tech2s.
