Title: Transmission Oil. To renew or not to renew?
Post by: FREDSTA on 23 November 2008, 10:02:49
Hi fellas and fellaesses,
I was going to change the transmission oil and filter on my 80,000 mls '95 2.5, but read in the haynes book that this only needs doing on cars covering more than 20,000 a year, which if you look at the above figures, ain't mine. Has anyone taken this advice and ended up locked up and in a ditch? (O.K. I'll accept anything less dramatic as well).
Cheers, Fredsta.

after a period of time the transmission oil becomes thinned and loses it sticky consisancy.at 80,000 miles i think i would change it ,to keep the gearbox working prefect. :y

Besides the mileage, it's been in there for the last 13 years, a change won't do any harm & you might even be pleasantly surprised at the difference it makes. It can be a messy job though as GM thoughtfully missed off the oil fill/dip stick tube. :-? (assuming it's an auto)

auto, i think change at 60k, and have read a guide saying the same, service intervals in the either tech or faq section. So yes change it.
Manual, not sure...

Yes, it's an auto.

Definitely change it.

There is plenty of info on here about how to do it, where to get the gaskets and filter from and how to refill.

far far better than having a failure or a dropping off of performance.

According to my Vx dealers part department, which has been proved to be 100% realible so far, only one ATF is suitable for Omega's auto boxes and power steering.  The ATF is unique to Omega's in the Vx range they told me! ::) ::)

The part number is 093165414 for a litre at £6.71 inc VAT, after trade discount. :y :y

Dexron 3 for both Omega AR25 & AR35 automatic gearbox.
Dexron 2 for power steering.
ie do not use Dexron 3 for power steering as it effects the 'seals'.

So  is there a problem in using the ATF supplied by Vx? :-? :-?

Sorry not aware of the product your part number refers to, but it could be Dexron 2 which was used at one time in the Vauxhall auto box range, the Vauxhall bible was later updated for Dexron 3 to supersede Dexron 2 for all auto's.

Vx now not stocking dex 3, they had to scout round nearest dealers to get enough 1litre bottles when i did mine, and they not the cheapest.
Dex 2 now replaces 3 according to vx. But dex 2 in the omega box is not a known quantity, so 3 is recommended as its is known. Or it was last time i posted about it. There are "useful links" in the tech or faq pages iirc for oil suppliers.

Thanks for all that, but it has left me confused! ::) ::)

On checking the current Vx parts system the Parts man stated that part no. 093165414 is the only one listed for Omega's. :-? :-?

Only using what he supplied me with for the power steering, but I will be thoroughly checking this one out when I do the box! ;) ;)

Dex 3 mustn't be used for power steering - Dex 2 is for power steering - thats what you were probably supplied against that part nş (93165414)

I have the Dex 3 bottle here with part Nş marked on it (93160372) and Vx invoice!!

My stealer knew Dex3 for autoboxes & Dex2 for power steering :y

Apparently Dexron is a GM standard (Ford standard for ATFs is Mercon).  Dexron 3 is a totally different oil and not just an improvement on Dexron 2, and therefore is not always a direct replacement for Dex2.

Well that is the number quoted on a Caffyn's Vauxhall invoice for the  Vauxhall ATF.

By the way this dealer also supplied without any trouble, from stock, the door strap bush Part No. 090462823 which other Vx dealers have apparently found difficult to identify.

So I rate my dealer as he has been spot on with all other parts so far supplied. :y

to change atf you will need,
6 or 7 litres of dex3. Mine took 6 others say 7. Bare in mind some oil will remain in the torque converter so you wont get all of it out.
2 gaskits for both large and small sumps. Or the loctite 598 gaskit goo equivalent,or whatever the number is now.
1 filter, or clean the original if its in good nic and return the new one, unused, if they let you as its about £60, or get one cheaper, iirc, from a guy who advertises from the back of straight 6 news, delivered when you john autobahn stormers for the vx trade club card for £20.

Today I ventured out to my garage as I had to go to uni, and I have inspected the bottle of Vx ATF Part No 93165414 as quoted above.

It is for Dexron VI which my dealer stated, after checking the Vx system, was the ONLY ATF suitable for my Omega's power steering.

However I have never noticed any OOF member mentioning this Dexron, only those of the 2 or 3 variety, not my 6! :-? :-?

Any thought please? :D :D :D ;)

You are spot-on Lizzie, at the "beginning of 2006 General Motors activated DEXRON VI, which (they said) will replace all former DEXRON specifications ie II(D), II(E) & III, by the end of 2007" preess release from FUCHS. Therefore your VAUXHALL DEXRON VI can be used instead of DEXRON II and DEXRON III.

That's a relief Richard, so thanks!! :y :y :y

I thought my (so far) very realiable Vx dealer was not letting me down, but I was not totally convinced!! ::) ::) :D :D ;)
