Can you use WD40 instead of carb cleaner to clean the breathers?

Wd40 is not efficient for cleaning like a carb cleaner..

Nope, although petrol works quite well (some carb cleaner is little more than petrol!)

at work we use a similar oil to wd40 as rustguard- could even be wd40 under an industrial brand name!

WD40 will clean things in fact I find it quite good for removing crud off metal parts it works wonders on motorbike chain but it will leave a residual, it hasn't got the ability to instantly remove oil/grease for a spotless clean though.

I find it good at removing the crud in the smaller pipe and unions and it being an oil can actually help stop further build up.  ;)
