Title: Mayo..............
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 06 December 2008, 12:34:09
Hi All,

I've started losing water and have have to top up the tank more and more often!  So today I've been poking about to see if I can spot where its leaking from with no luck.

I checked the oil level whilst I was at it and it needed topping up, and when I removed the filler cap there was lots of sludgy light brown mayo type stuff under the cap and in the filler neck!!!

I've a horrible feeling that the waters leaking into the oil? and its either a head gasket on its way out? or the oil cooler?

Its a 2000 2.5 V6, and starts and runs fine, although tappets have been abit clattery when cold!

I'd appreciate any advice please!

Thanks

Steve

Thats as expected.....you get mayo build up due to short journeys etc.

The chances are you have little more than a weaping oil cooler plate, stat housing or bypass valve.

Mayo around the oil filler is common, because it sits in a "cold" part of the engine and condensation forms ...  wipe it clean and go for a decent run .. around 50-60 miles and really warm things up ... if it remains clean then there is no problem with water getting into the oil ... :)

Most common reason for water loss is HBV (Heater Bypass Valve) which will leak/not leak depending on cabin temp selected/outside air temp/cabin air temp   !!!!!!!!!   It moves to bypass water once the cabin is warm, and may leak in one position and not in another :(

get the car running and have someone keep changing the temp inside while you watch/feel around the HBV for leaks.

HBV is at the back of the engine under the scuttle, difficult to reach .. :(
