Hello branders and a warm welcome to you! :y
As for your problem, never had that myself but it sounds like a switch/thermostate problem on it. :-?
No doubt the real experts will be on soon to fully advise! ;)

The correct behaviour (as demonstrated on my 3.0 Elite) is:
When sat in traffic, Temp up to 92, fan kicks in at half speed. Temp drops to 85. Repeat.
If temp reaches 97 both fans kick in at full speed and temp drops very rapidly. You will know if this is happening as is rather noisy and the engine revs tend to drop with the load.
Now I am no expert but my guess would be either your temp guage is stuck or maybe your thermostat isnt opening properly so the water isnt getting circulated through the rad and the cooling fan isnt being very effective. Or it could be a blocked rad or maybe an airlock ?
I am sure someone with greater knowledge will be along shortly

Sounds like fan switch to me and it is located on the rad at the top on the left hand side
Change that first as it is so easy, then if symptoms remain come back and we will get our bonces together again.

My elite has two fans, one comes on regardless of the temperature of the engine when the climate control has the air conditioning on.
The other one comes on at high engine temperature to cool it down and should do so very rarely, if at all.
It sounds like your thermostat is stuck open if the engine is running cool, and that the air conditioning is keeping the fan on to me.

Thanks to ya'll
Fans used to behave just like bigdods only now the aux fan kicks in at full speed and stays there.
Will change the switch as advertised and let you know how it goes.
Cheers again. ;D

Usual proviso - the temp scale numberical markings on facelifts and pre face lifts are significantly different. On both 'normal' operation should be the needle roughly in the middle of the guage and it should get there fairly soon after startup (couple of miles driving) -any longer and its a sign of stuck open stat.
-
Well i changed the switch and...... no change. guage still reads bout 90 and the aux fan still kicks in at full speed and stays on.
Is there a relay that determines fan speed?
the guage does work as advertised as disconnecting the aux fan made temp go up to 97 i reconnected and fan brought temp down to 90 again.
it also heats up as ians says, within few miles or so. no longer

Are you sure it's not the A/C fan?
Just checking...

No not the a/c fan. thats on the right as you look at the car and it switches on when i turn on a/c
-
Well, i found the relays controling the fans in the engine compartment. changed them both.
Also found out from vaux main dealer about a ceramic resistor in the fan line which reduces speed of fan.
Changed that as well but still no joy!!!!
switched the heatin on max and the fan does cut out every once in a while. so am back to square one! :-?
