Finally managed to find the time - and patience to get this alternator off the car, done quick visual checks, spring connectore diode pack etc, nothing obviously amiss - are there any actual tests thst can be done - bench testing wise, or is it a case of clean-refit-and-hope??

The last time I took an 'failed' alternator of a car (my Diseasal Astra) to my local auto-spark it was given a clean bill of health. So I took the car to him where he just cleaned up the various earth / chassis connections etc. & all was OK :y :y

I recall bodging something together involving with a drill press and a fan belt once. It wasn't pretty or particularly safe, in all likelihood. ::) A decent auto electricians (if you can still find one) should be able to test one, as said.

no andy def not belt - that was only changed 3k ago. cant think of anything else it can be, but really dont want to go thru all the bother of taking it off again - bloody nightmare!!

Sorry! ;) I wasn't suggesting the belt auxillary belt, just nit picking on the terminology used .... ie fan belt rather than the technically correct term of aux belt on an Omega
