emgine management light came a 100 yards later a gradual loss of power then nothing. am i right in thinking my timing belt has snapped. if so do i scrap the car , put a new engine, or just buy a new car. i drive a 1996 elite 3.0 v6

you are best posting this in the general help section, far more people will see it there, this section is for forum issues like missing pics etc.

As said .. into the other part of the forum is best ..
but IMHO a timing belt ... or Cam-belt as we call it would not give a gradual loss of power .. but an almighty bang and instant loss.. !!
As you have an EML light on... have a read here ..

Problem could be as simple as a crank sensor ... 30 minute fix .. !!! :)

does it really take you 30 mins :P
trying to yank the last one out i swapped must have took 30 minutes alone otherwise it would have only took me 15 mins!

I know MarkDTM probably does this in 7.275315 seconds ... but I'm old, slow, and senile .....
If I have to do this damned thermostat it'll probably be a 3 day job !!!

As Entwood says, do the paperclip test first to see what codes are stored. If the cambelt has snapped you can sell the car to me :)

the thermostat should be do-able over a weekend from how fast i'v had the plenum off!
it's just a pain because you'll lose a bit of water with undoing the bottom rad hose!

...it doesnt sound like its the timing belt to me unless there were quite a few bangs as it came to a stop it could be a tensioner though if the belts jumped teeth in a series of jumps as it's lost tension

The lack of power could be because it's gone into a limp mode, you do notice a big difference when that happens, maybe a sensor has failed, a belt going would sound pretty bad as already mentioned

no big bang, just lose of power then no power. someone mentioned limp mode? explain what this is

If the ECU senses a problem, or fails, the engine goes into "limp mode" ... EML light on and limited to about 3000 rpm IMSMR... in "ford speak" it was "get you home mode"

As I said before ... read the fault codes if the EML light is on and tell us the numbers .. :)

When the belt went im my old miggy at about 40mph there were no bangs or noises..... it was like someone just turned the ignition off .... exept all the dash lights came on .... no noises at all :'( :'(
