hope everyone is having a good xmas and no doubt wer'e all stuffed full of all that christmas food and booze by now, but I could do with a bit of advice as my mig has provided me with a rather nasty xmas present. I was driving to work on xmas eve and the computer display came up with "check oil level". I thought little of it other than to make a mental note to pick up some oil, although it hadn't been that long since I,d checked it and the level was fine. Anyway ,I got to work and the car drove fine but when I parked up my mate noticed oil pouring out.I popped the bonnet and the oil had got into the headertank of the cooling system and was running everywhere. My first thought was a blown head gasket but then the car hadn't overheated, hand'nt misfired at all, nor was there lots of white smoke as had happened when i've had one go before on a previous car. I called the AA out and the guy said he couldn't say for sure but he had done a mate's V6 omega and it had been the oil intercooler that had corroded, not the head gasket. Obviously I dont want to pay out for a head gasket and then find out that its the cooler or vice-versa! I'm inclined to go for the cooler being at fault but any advice from those more in the know would be much appreciated. Also what sort of costs should I be looking at?
thanks, jerry

Oil cooler fault it is then!thanks for the prompt reply, anyone any idea of what I should expect to pay to fix?

Not sure, to be honest. Couple of hundred quid at the very max, if your doing it yourself. Not the hardest job in the world...

There is a cooler kit thats around £100, plus all the extra bits and bobs, £130+VAT for bits...
If you are paying someone to di it, £300-£400 seems to be usual price range :o
Don't use the car until fixed.

Thanks to everyone for the links on this, unfortunately I don't have either the tools or time to attempt the job myself nor the confidence really so I've managed to get it into a local garage to do it .Ive known the guy a long time and he's never "done" me on anything but he reckons he's been quoted about £400 for the cooler and all associated seals etc.-does this sound well over the top?
thanks,jerry

Yes, stupidly!
I have the part numbers somewhere....about 120 quid for bits.
About 3 hours to do if your any good.

crikey thats almost dealer charges .... i charge half that inc the parts ,, :o

Don't forget that the cooling system will need a lot of flushing to remove the oil otherwise you'll end up with problems further down the road.

Elite pete ,
If I was closer I'd leap at the chance!!!!I think I'll be questioning my garage rather closely once he's back open on monday before I ok anything !!!!Thought it was a bit extreme, but like I said , I've never had any reason to doubt his honesty in the past as compared with other quotes I've had in the past with all different types of motors from dealers or otherwise he's always been both considerably cheaper and done a good job-maybe the majority of the price was in his sourcing of the parts. In any event I shant be parting with my hard
earnt that easily. Thanks to all and best wishes for the new year!!

Right , the price has come down to a more realistic figure and the oil cooler is on but the flushing is taking a lot longer than anticipated. Is it possible that all the gunk that is in the system has clogged up the thermostat and ,if so, how do I get to it to free it up? Be grateful to anyone with any ideas/ links!
As always, thanks to everyone for their help,
jerry :)
