Title: Engine Light on but no Fault Codes!
Post by: pauldmackay on 24 December 2008, 10:29:55
Recently got Omega 2.2 auto a few months ago, no problems at with except in the last few weeks.  The Engine light in coming on.  I'll be driving along and the eml comes on, the car still drive perfectly with no reduction in power etc etc.

The problem is I've had the car into vauxhall twice and they've said there's no fault codes stored.  I've since bought a fault code reader which I've plugged in again its shows no fault codes stored. As a result I don't know where to start.  Is there any common items that cause the eml to triggered but not store codes?

Sorry, It's the one with the picture of the engine blcok not the car and spanner. The manual for the omega mentions it's for emissions on teh 2.2 but as there's no codes being stored.......its intermittent, there's no pattern to when it comes on, I just drove back for Spain didn't come on on at all, but went out yesterday and it came on after about 20 miles, I went in vauxhall again, they said no codes AGAIN, and I drove anther 200 miles plus and no issues, theres no noticable effects when driving the car at all when the light is on.

Don't mind changing parts bit but don't know where to start and the dealer said wait until a fault code is stored or it could be the ECU!

lamba sensor ? i have known this to cause a simmilar problem with mercedes cars , there was two sensors and the last sensor on the system was fauly and telling the ecu that emissions were wrong and brings on the polution light eqivalent to your emisions light , its worth a check not to sure if theres a dual sensor system fitted to the omega.

there is 1 pre and 1 post lambda sensor, i'll get the emissions checked to see if the cats are are failing first, if not, i'll do the lambda's.

thanks

Still working on this one!

Managed to get get fault code P0220 today, after a few searches I think this is the sensor on the accelerator pedal.  I'm not sure if the faults are related at all as the emissions light been coming on without throwing up a fault codes at all, so this P0220 is a first but would this cause the emission light to go on?

It's not bringing up the the car with the spanner light and the car still drives 100%.  Pick up 2 new lambda sensors tomorrow.

Clean the throttle body and breathers as a starter for 10, info in the maintenance section.

Where are you?

I'm in Glasgow.

Cleaned the throttle body a few weeks back along with all the breathers, wasn't too bad, cars only done 51,000, only thing thats been done to it the last six months was a full new exhaust, but no pre cat on the new one and the 2 old lambdas were used.

Hi
just read through your mesages.
The exact same thing is happening to my car, except i've just had to have a new cat fitted as mine blew a seam!
Just got it back from the dealers today and they say it's either a sensor (not the mass air) or the ecu.
quoting about £145 for the sensor and the ecu  about £750 !!!!! :-0
If push comes to shove, anywhere I can get a 'cheap' ecu from!? :o
Thanks,
Ed

Ask yourself this....

....given that the ECU is little more than a computer.....how would the engine be running if the ECU was breaked  :y

They certainly would not be able to communicate with it via Tech2 and if an interface was down then the live data would show all!

Get your emissions checked first, I had the emissions checked today before and after new lamba's and emissions remain unchanged, but emissions light still on, although it;s never been flashing.

If the emissions are ok, I can't see any real problems until you actually have any fault codes.  If the emission are too high it should through up a code and the same if it's a sensor.  I've got absolutely nowhere getting the emissions light to stay off, ordered a new pedal senor as getting p0220 and MAF just because it's never been changed and won't do any harm an both are linked to oxygen intake.

Very unlikely you'll need a ECU i reckon, I guess the cars still running exactly as it did before.  When you got the downpipe changed, did you get one with a pre-cat, I never did, but as i said before the emissions are spot on.

Is it possible if the ecu sees it has to make a change to the fueling greater than expected ie within certain limits/tolerance, could this possibly cause the emissions light to come on although as result of the change by the ecu all is actually still okay with the emissions.

Blimey, I'm glad I just read the manual again, My Eghaust Emmissions light has started coming on when I start the engine and the going off about 30 seconds later,  I dont know why its started to do this but the manual is saying that this is normal  ? ? ?

Eventually got to the bottom this, it was quite simple really.

Never got a fault code or had to reset the emissions light since changing the lambdas.

Crossed checked the orginal lambdas on this website with orginal part numbers , http://www.ngkpartfinder.co.uk/cars_commercial.php, quite simply when I had a full new system fitted the lambdas were re-fitted the wrong way round, ie front one should have been at the back and vice a versa!

There both different part no's so there we have the solution.  Never thought of checking before.
