Golfbuddy got me thinking, (never good)
I got my first car at 19 (I think) so 1995 ish
I was paying about 45p a litre then, what about the rest of you?
-
No idea but given your figures and i started driving 2 years earlier probably much the same....
Scarey though...
-
Don't know...didn't really care. I had a Honda PXR50 that done 100mpg :D
That was 1989.
-
1969 3 shillings and seven pence a GALLON, approx 18p today
-
What's a Gallon? ;D
-
What's a Gallon? ;D
Now it's my sunday night beverage
-
Roughly £1.64 per gallon, which is 36p per litre. This was in 1982.
We used to ride our mopeds around in the eveing, topping our tanks up from the drops that were left in the pipes on the forecourts after the filling stations were closed. I seem to remember that most were closed by 7.00pm. :o
Interestingly, according to the AA, unleaded petrol in 1995 cost 54p per litre. :-? Memory fading JimBob? ;D
Edit: Check Out The AA Data (http://www.theaa.com/public_affairs/reports/Petrol_Prices_1896_todate_gallons.pdf)

Haven't got a clue.........far too long ago!! ::) ;D
-
About 75p a gallon, I reckon...
-
Interesting, but there have always been big local differences.
was definately under 50p when I started, as it climbed was always a challenge for 49.9 and below
damn near at the same game now with 99.9!

As you say, there have always been local differences. We used to live in Bristol then and petrol was always a bit cheaper than it was further along the M4. Something to do with transportation costs I seem to remember.

Probably, we are just down the road from Stanlow

1968 .... aged 17 ... working at a "filling station" as they were then called .. best customers were the "posh" folks who wanted 4 gallons of "best" @ 4s 11d a gallon .. most would give a £1 and drive away ... a 4d tip every time !! :)
"Check your tyres sir ?" ... 6d tip for doing that and a screen wipe :)
I bought a 1952 ( 1 year younger than me !!) Morris Minor .. 918cc side valve engine, for £35... it ran on 92 octane at 3s 11d a gallon
ps....
1 gallon = 4.54 litres
4s = 20p
6d = 2.5p
unleaded had yet to be invented !!! :)
and to put things in context .. I was paid 2s 6d an hour !!!! :)

2* missing, but I remember 80p gallon on the first bike and a lot less with the moped
-
Yep 2* mixed with 2 stroke oil. Only cost a couple of quid to fill my Vespa in 1982

I use to fill my CD175 when I was 17 for around £1.50 That was in 1979 & petrol was about 50 pence a gallon.
-
whe I started driving 5* was still available...just, can remember what we were paying but on payday used to fill my mini up with it....razz it around thinking the extra octane had to be worth 10bhp and then run it on 2* for the rest of the week as I was broke.....
those were the days
-
1957, 5 shillings (25p) or about 13p per litre :y
-
I started just before the illustrious Mr Meldrew, about 1968, and I can't remember either. However I do still have my petrol ration coupons from the 1973 crisis :o.

Had a motorbike when I was 17 in 1988 not a car, but I am sure petrol was about £1.80 a gallon definately less that £2 :-?
-
I started driving not long after the petrol ration books were issued up North in Sheffield, it must have beed in the mid 70s, or there abouts.
:-/
-
Ahhhh memories... :)
2 Star, 4 Star (Premium and Regular) an 5 star. Petrol ration vouchers :y
Those were the days.
75p a gallon, so about £7.50 to fill the tank on my Hillman Avenger back in '77. :y
Beer was about 24p a pint at the Students union and I earned £27.50 for a 40 hr week.
Luxury!
-
...Oh, and the Avenger was a 1969 model which cost me £60 secondhand and lasted me three years!
;D ;D

Mate of mine had a Wartburg when we were at school. Handy built-in navigational aid - well ahead of its' time. If you get lost and need to retrace your route just turn round and follow the blue smoke!
Happy days. ;D

about 40 something p a gallon back in 1988 - had a works van (didn't need a car) for 1st 2 years, so never took much notice...
-
Think it was in the 70/80p range for me when I passed in 2001, but I really can't remember.
I drove past a local Murco garage on my way home - 106.9 !!!
It's a farce...You can't blame the cost of oil worldwide, because most other countries are still miles cheaper!
-
Well I used to like bike economy 200 from my moped, around 60 from my 100 and I thrashed that - it was fast for its size though (ported & expansion pipe)!
250s from 50 to 80 - I got 80mpg on a long run from Pickering to Gloucester averaging 80mph on the DCs
My 600 was 25-50 usually in low 40s
-
About 3 gallons for £1 back in 1972 in my 1961 Austin Cambridge which cost me:
£65 for car and £75 insurance
earning about £8 a week
paid mum £2.50
got drunk every night
Oh the good old days ;D ;D ;D
Brian
-
cant rember the price but it cost 3.50 a week for the bike and 20 for a tank in the micra 1990
-
I seem to recall paying 151.9 a gallon at tesco when i started driving in 1988. Thats about 34p/litre :'(
-
Can't remember but I do know this much... I'm paying less per litre now than I did when I was 17 ;)
-
When I started driving I fed coal to the steam boiler.... ;D
-
Remember getting 4 gallons of 4 star and getting change from £1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Year? 1963
-
i think it was still plankton when i started driving!
