Hey car fans, I've managed to get around to changing the fluid in my automatic gearbox, tricky and messy job but I'm glad I changed it fluid looked really brown and think it was overdue.
Anyway when I took the main transmission sump off I noticed that my magnet was missing from the bottom of the sump, the ATF was changed by the previous owner, I guess they must have chucked it wondering what it was :o
Anyway do I need a magnet? If so can a small substitute one do? Really need to get the car back on the road for work on Monday and don't have time or the weather to wait until I get a new one from JPat?
Thanks

think it's only there to gather bits of metal shavings etc from the gearbox to stop it going back into it

dont know if this is of any help, but the magnets used for this purposes are usually very magnetic, I dont think putting in a "fridge-kind magnet" will be appropriate.
I would rather have no magnet at all then a lousy piece that will eventually loosen.
Don't know where to get a proper magnet, sorry...

maybe ask somebody sound in parts department about them and search for magnets on the internet (it'll be like an industrial one or something) and i think it's in a ring shape but not sure tbh

yup its like a polo shape approx 2" across, its very possible that i have one somewhere, so if you get very stuck give me a shout, i do need it for my spare AR35 but as the sump aint on it as yet & in no rush to do it then im sure i can find another when the time comes, hate to hear you stuck ;)

Tim, thanks for the offer, was planning to get my car back on the road by monday. Will look around my collection of bits and pieces to see if I can find an alternative. Cheers

you could always try a magnet off an old speaker if you can get one off in one bit, certainly be strong enough, not that im endorsing a bodge you understand ;D ;D ;)

I would say your better getting one from an old computer hard drive... The magnets which are used to move the head are VERY V-E-R-Y strong!
Just dont let them snap together in your hands, because if they grab your skin you will end up with a blood blister! :o
