Jumped in mig at quarter to 6 this morning to get her warmed up. Temp was -5.
MID said I had 56 miles left in tank. Work from mine is approx 12 miles. I thought to myself I would get some fuel on the way home. I pulled up outside my friends to give him a lift to work as he lives on the way and the MID said 49 miles. I pulled up half on the kerb and half on the road. Selected park and left engine running.
About 2 mins later the car coughed, farted then cut out. I tried starting the car about 4 times and it was trying to fire but couldnt.
Obviously fuel shortage. Looked at fuel gauge which was low and range and this said 49 miles still. I reset the MID which then shockingly made the fuel light flash and the MID read 2 miles!!!!!
What would of caused the MID to be so far out? Never had problems with this before. Cant see it being the cold as it was -8 the other morning and she ran like a dream. Any ideas??? :-/

Maybe the fact that you parked the car up on a kerb caused the remaining fuel in the tank to slosh away from the fuel tank outlet.
That's all I can think of as my MID is usually fairly accurate when it comes to low fuel time.

yep....and the fact that the range is based on fuel consumption over the last period of running (it takes an averga over a set time).....this is likely to have been based on the last journey where the engine would have been hot and using less fuel......

Oh right. great. No work needed then just more fuel ;D
Thanks :y

My car is parked on a hill and sometimes reads far more or less than when I last drove it, I wondered if it was something to do with the float for the gauge..
-
It seems to be out a lot if its gone from 49 on the level to 2 and then running out whilst on what is only a small kerb :-/

i always ignored my info display and looked at the gauge instead, if the light was on, i put petrol in
never let me down that way

Bighed put some Petrol in it you tight a55 ;D

lol! credit crunch christian dont forget ;)
i'v have my car show similar amounts of range to yours but i check the guage and see if it looks reasonable.
also yes small kerbs do send the mid that far out
also just to show how far out it can be it said i had six miles range left... after it'd already shown 0 and i'd driven it about 3 miles
reset it to say 6 then take it back 4 more miles and then it started missfiring lol

Thats the funny thing. the petrol gauge said roughly the same (as it should at 49 miles. Light wasn't even on. Normally comes on around 50 miles left

...Gauge and MFD on mine are pretty accurate - confirmed that recently when I ran out...!! Unfortunately I was going on the fact that it's supposed to be a 75 ltr tank and only ever put about 67 ltrs in when both the MFD and gauge said it was empty........ however there seems to be only approx 69 usable ltrs....as that's how much it took to fill it up post the run-out....!! :-[
Typically I ran out in sight of the garage....but was stuck on the motorway....!!! >:(
