Title: Dashboard light showing.
Post by: Scorpio on 07 January 2009, 17:56:03
Hello  Friends,  Have a little hitch. A light on the control panel, a 'Car with a Spanner'  through it, is showing. The handbook says it is the immobiliser ??  The car starts and runs alright, but must admit we don't go far this weather. Is this a major problem please or should I get help. Thank you for any suggestions. The car is a 2.2 Auto cdx V reg. for 2000:

Not an imobiliser if the car starts.

Use the paperclip test to see what it is.

I don't know about the 2.2 but someone else will no doubt advise :y

You can't paperclip a 2.2, will need Tech II or code reader :y

Engine ECU detects a abnormality.  Not immobiiliser (that causes it to flash).

Need a code reader on it to find out what problem is.

Can you please advise best remedy ?? Would 'Mobile Engine Repaires' have the Code reader ??  Is the car alright to use for shopping ?? untill I can get it repaired. Thank you for your help.

If the engine is running ok it might not be a serious fault, the only way to find out for certain will be to have the codes read by a tech 2 or similar.

If it's something simple like emissions then running it for a short time at low revs should be ok, but it's on for a reason so it'd be better to get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Hi all, Thank you for your quick replies. Am getting worried as what to do next. Either phone a VX garage or try to find a smaller garage that has the Tech 2 equipment or maybe one that does mobile repairs.

In order of preference,
1. Tech 2 owning member on here
2. Tech 2 independen if you can find one
3. Snap on/other "generic"  reader for general engine codes, but wont read all systems
4.dealer tech2, last resort, most expensive, most incompetent(as a rule).

Hello All, Thank you so much for your speedy replies and advice.
There was I looking in the phone books last night, making a list and this morning, after having an ecg, I started phoning and got a p.m. at 'nationwide' -- the mind was going beserk, so decided to get some petrol etc:  travelling down the road, watching the dash -----
Suddenly, I realised No Light Showing. When I got back home, I switched the engine on/off quite a few times = No Light!!
Was my eye's disieving me or was it Gremlins ?? just can't believe it is now ok!! have to go out tomorrow,Wish me luck and Thanks again for your support.

Could be an intermitent sensor failure or a lose connection somewhere :-?

The fault should still be stored in the car if its checked.

best to get it checked still mate as any fault codes will be stored ..

it maywell be a problem in the pipeline and that was an early sign? with the codes you can determine what was happening before. :y

im sure theres a member with tech 2 on here somewhere localish to you who maywell do a check for a reasonable fee :)
