Well, 5 1/2 hours later my drivers exhaust manifold is still not done. Luckly the bloke helping me, works at my place and im on the same shift as him, so had a lift this morning. All the manifold studs and heat shield bolts came out sweet as a nut. The pig is the stainless steel coolant pipe that runs from front to the back of the block. You cannot see where it has to sit, going back on as all the pipes and wires are in the way. So at quarter to 11 last night we decided to call it a day as we were cold, tired, hungry and hurting after hanging over the engine for god knows how long. Oh and before we slung the pipe!! There seems to be (cant see but can feel) a metal pipe of some description which seems to overlap the place that the coolant pipe should fix to. :-/
Any help with getting this $*!"+*$ of a thing back on would be great :y

Remove the coolant bridge but get new washers for it. ;)
-
Unlucky mate it will be done soon, on a possitive note my cambelt kit is done. :)
You will get it done at last though mate, that noise has been pissing you off for a while!
-
SO....you got the pipe out but cant get it in?
Have you removed all the rubber hoses associated with the bypass valve etc?
I suspect the pipes your talking about are the oil cooler pipes.
Interestingly, this is the one bit I dont find to hard!
-
Yeah all pipes for hbv are out the way. ( hbv is out) Were strugglin our ass's off :'(

Well the pipe in question just mates to the rear of the block using two bolts and an O ring inserted into the pipe (make sure the old Or ing is removed as they sometimes stick to the block)
Fit the lower bolt on the drivers side first adn leave slightly loose and then fit the harder to get at bolt....often a 1/4 inch hex socket (find the right size hex to fit the torx head) makes access past the cooler pipes a bit easier

And the new O ring is still inplace before you reassemble ::)

Was that the exasperated look on the realisation he needed to strip it down again ;D
-
That was the look of trying to calm the nuclear explosion that had gone off in my head and not let it reach my hammer holding hand, as much as a severly smashed up Omega estate might have made me feel soooooo much better, it would have cost me a fortune and a good beating from the wife ;D
-
Funny thing was, it was stripped, O ring found and replaced and put back together in a couple of hours :)

Shouldnt sound like a Tank when i next see it then :y
-
No mate and with the cam gasket being done again and new belt and tensioners she will be sweet as a nut :y
As to coolant pipe I will be attacking it again tonight about half 5 so hopefully, being fresh faced, warm fed and watered it should all come together :y
-
Get Jack on it mate ;)
-
Ha ha. Could do with me lad mate tbh. His hands will be mega small enough to get in and do it :) :y
-
And teh Engine will be big enough to loose the poor guy in it ;D
-
I have to say I am surprised that your having bother with this simple little job ;D
-
Does anyone want to buy an Omega estate? Never been raced or rallied ;D
On a serious note. How much petrol would it take to get it to burn. No, I mean really burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrn. :-X
Any how after a few more hours of arseing about we got it all back together. But the problem struck when filling up we heard the sound of running water. :'( :'( :'(
Looking underneath and water was running down the block and onto the floor. :( >:( After getting my arm (why dont they bend in more places) down the back it felt like it was coming from that damn coolant pipe. :-/ :'(
We cant understand this as the block was cleaned and spotless and the gasket was sat perfectly where it should be. I have enen checked the vx part number of gasket against the one in the how to off here and its defo the right gasket. Would a sealant thats made for that sort of job help?? All rubber pipes are fixed back properly. Any help/ideas would be great. :y :y :y

Gasket....it should be a rubber O ring
Its not fallen out during re-fitting has it?

Same thing happened when I did mine but to be fair I didn't fit the coolant pipe and O ring :(
-
Ha Ha, well the o ring was definatly back on and sitting right. Were hoping that the sealant will do the job tonight
-
but there must me a problem if your using sealant mate, you shouldnt have to, th epipe aint damaged from trying to get it off or like muched up in anyway from prizing with a screwdriver?
-
Not that we could see. It looked flat and intact.
-
Are there any other coolant pipes that are in the same area as the stainless steel coolant pipe at the back of the block? :-/ :y
-
Yes, there is the helter skelter type pipe that attaches to the bypass valve, the throttle body heater valve pipe (coolant bridge) and the bypass valve to coolant bridge pipe.
The one to check is the helter skelter type pipe to the pipe.
-
Thanks very much. Will do :y
-
That coolant pipe has a fork at the bottom and also attaches to a smaller hose. I'd check that was on and is OK.
If you put the car on axle stands, get right underneath the car and hug the gearbox on my manual you can just about touch the point where the pipe mates to the block. You are blind but you can tighten the bolts too.
-
Just to clear it up, its done and not leaking anymore..... :)
-
And the route cause fault was.....?
-
Dont know tbh. Took the coolant pipe off and O ring was seated properly, checked all connections and put it all back together. Again. Only this time everything was ok. Cant get over just how quiet she is now, BIG thanks to everyone who has given me advice :y :y :y
