I was wondering, obviously if you're here on this forum, chances are you've got at least one Omega.
But what other car would you have, as a second car?
I used to have a V6 Veccy, but that handled like an overweight pig with a slight limp... so one of those would be out.
My first car was a Cav, with an 1800 carb engine, so it obviously wasn't going to set a new land speed record. But it was a minter, and used to embarass a few mates of mine in their Nova's. I'll always have a soft-spot for Cav's, so I think I'd have to say I'd have a Cav GSi (or a Cav Turbo, providing it had a fully working Tx box!)
-
This is something I've thought about many times. I like the Alfa 156 (prefacelift V6's especially) - but then there's the Honda CRX I've wanted for ages, then I think of older stuff, like a Capri or Mk2 RS2000...
I odn't know. When I win the lottery...
-
Pug 605 3.0 SVE for me...
-
One of the following
Lotus Sunbeam
Land Rover V8
Talbot Avenger Estate
Carlton GSi3000
-
Am tempted to buy a classic Range Rover V8, and gas it up....
-
...... I'll always have a soft-spot for Cav's, ......
I could think of a few soft spots for a Cavaliar .... Saddleworth Moor, Southport beach ;D ;D ;D ;D only kidding
24v Senator every time .... but I didn't really need to say that though did I ;)
and a P5B Rover coupe
and a 59 Cadillac if I could find room for it

Good call!
I've always loved 156's - I remember going to the Alfa dealer when it was 1st released to have a gander (no intention of buying - couldn't afford seeing as I was only about 17 or 18 at the time!) Beautiful looking car, and a gorgeous engine - the bonnets on them things should have been made out of perspex. But, and it's a big but, you'll always be expecting a big, expensive failure to happen at any given moment.

I'd have an alfa 166 3.0 V6 Super Lusso :y ;D

Now that's not very nice is it?! ;D There was nowt up with Cav's - they did their job beltin' (their job being sat on motorways all day!)
-
If it was something that I can afford now!!!
I would have another Capri 2.8i Special or a 280 brooklands, XJ8 Jaguar
If money was no object I like Aston Martin :y
-
I'd consider the following;
Elise S1
Smart Roadster
3 wheel thingy (several possibilities, but not the Sinclair!)
Bike (sidecar?)
Ur Quattro
S3
Kit car
Fiesta (current model only)
Mustang
Sure there's several more . . .
-
Old jaguar XJ pillarless coupe with manual O/D 'box
V8 converted dolly sprint
Loved the 1.9 GTi 205s I had
Had a few Talbot Sunbeams before...would love a Lotus Sunbeam or Mk1 RS2000 with forest arches and twin 45's on a lumpy cam

My mum had a banger Chrysler estate - a great car, I had a Sunbeam in a very broke part of life, and it was the best handling car I had ever driven - but mine was a tuned 1.6.
The estate - finding a cheap not rusty is almost impossible, then it would need the cam changed, rebore with 90mm pistons, hardened valves and a multipoint EFI conversion

Mine was done under a severe budget hence twin Strombergs rather than twin 40DCOEs

I've gone as far as buying Ron Champion's "Build your own sports car for £250" about 5 years ago, but have never got round to it. One day...
But seeing as Mk2 Escorts are a bit thin on the ground (at reasonable prices), and Sierra's are starting to get the same way, how about using an Omega that's getting ready for the scrapper? Now then... :-/
-
No idea why, but still fancy the previous shapr Type-R
-
second car
economical 1.4 clit or
money down the drain E46 M3 ;D (better never have that budget)

Maybe the rear diff, but that's about it.
I am contemplating designing my own chassis. Just not happy with what is out there, would be easier to start with some sort of shell though.

Those are all kinda similar to the miggy. The E36 M3 isn't really any faster than a 3.0 Omega, a mate has one and it doesn't impress for the money.

Hmmm,
Rover SD1 V8 Vitesse
But really the second car would have to be a fair bit cheaper to run than the Omega.
Started looking at Calibra's again. Quite a few 8 Valve ones about for peanuts.......

Alfa Romeo GTV V6, the old one that rusted faster than it went.
If i was looking for a replacement today for the miggy it would be either an XJR or possibly an early hemi engined 300C and a gas conversion :y

Ahh, it's just that the GPO used to have a load of 'em (apparently!) And it used to be a "1 key fits all" jobbie too, so a favourite pasttime of engineers used to be moving their mates van elsewhere haha ;D
-
........ And it used to be a "1 key fits all" jobbie too, ..
Same as my MKIII Cortina. Infact it only needed to look like a key, a lolly stick would do! Honest.

They are a stunning car when you find a good one, although good ones command big money.
Really needs to be LHD though, there are some quality RHD conversions but without the option of the M3 steering rack they used the 325i one instead. Common consensus is that the LHD version is a much better drive as a result.

Are we talking what practical second car like an Omega would I have?
Audi RS4 Avant
Or just what second car?
Already have it ;)
-
Joined this discussion a bit late. I can't imagine life without a Lotus seven style car of some sort. Just what you need to complement an Omega. Excels at everything an Omega does badly and vice-versa.
But seeing as Mk2 Escorts are a bit thin on the ground (at reasonable prices), and Sierra's are starting to get the same way, how about using an Omega that's getting ready for the scrapper? Now then... undecided
If I were to do it again and I wanted a single donor vehicle I'd go for Westfield's MX5-based kit. The parts on an MX5 are already nice and light, the gearbox ratios are nicely sorted for a lightweight car (Omega ratios would be dire in a Seven) and MX5 mechanicals are bomb proof. Part of me is having unclean thoughts about an X30XE in a seven though. [smiley=evil.gif]
Assuming I could afford another fun car on top of that - well, there are loads of classics I'd love. Where do I start? Lotus Elan / Europa / Cortina / Carlton, Ford Escort Mk1/2, Cortina mk 1/2/3, Consul, Rover P5B/P6/SD1, Triumph TR4a/TR5/TR6/Dolomite Sprint/2500Pi, BMW2002, 3.0CSL... In fact, pretty much any classic car seems attractive compared to the uninspiring boxes on the roads today.
Just watched the whole of "life on mars" on DVD and it's great just for the classic cars. :-*

I would love one but where do you use the performance? I was speaking to a guy who tried in Belgium. He's not allowed to go to Belgium any more. It's a bit too expensve to do track days in, IMHO, and most UK tracks are probably a bit tight to really streatch your legs in one of those :-/
Still, I wonder if Top Gear are going to acknowledge their lap record any time soon?

Have to say I am more than happy with my Omega. Failing that I get quite a buzz from driving the wifes Volvo S40 T4 200bhp through the front wheels can be quite scary, and it does not attract the law like a superpoo (subaru).
Alternatively it would have to be back to my first love, a Manta 400.
All the best
