Title: Oh break I've snapped a crank pulley bolt
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 15 January 2009, 19:15:38
As above. Putting crank pulley back on after changing cam belt, went to torque it up (65NM I think this is correct) and snapped one. Same in the water pump pulley!!!!! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Assume I can't get away with 5 in the crank rather than 6? Will I be able to drill it out and re tap?

if there's a stub sticking out on the crankshaft then you could possibly get some mole grips after taking the pulley off (depends how tight it is in the actual hole-might beable to get it out if it just tightens against the pulley)

tbh the crank pulley bolts i just do up very tight by hand without a torque wrench and have been fine without any sheered bolts or loose ones

To tight....crank pulley bolts are 20Nm!

The water pump bolts are 8 with a dab of locktite!

I never torque the pulley bolts either, just as tight as possible by hand. same goes for the water pump ones but with loctite, if you havent already I would be more concerned about gettin the water pump one out first.

dont like the chances of fitting a drill in there to drill them out tho..

Oh dear (putting it politely)!!!

I only did the water pump ones to 8 and still managed to snap one!

There is no stub sticking out on the crank so only thing I can think of is to drill it and re tap? Or will the metal be too hard to tap?

Think the water pump might be slightly easier as there is a bit sticking out of the back.

All in all its been a pretty disastrous first attempt at any serious work on the miggy.

Still got the cam cover gaskets and a service to do yet.

Its not put me off though. We learn from our mistakes.

As said above, they are only 20Nm, which isn't that tight (certainly not 'do them up as tight as you can' :o)

You shoudl be able to use a little chisel or flat blade screwdriver to tap the crank bolt remains in an anti clockwise direction to get it out

when i did my cam belt one of crank pulley bolts was already sheared. Vx service history. I took a scriber and gently "stabbed" the bolt/stud to one side of centre, move the scriber in an anti clockwise direction, like your stiring a cup of tea if you know what i mean, and it just undid. Wound it straight  out no problem at all. But depends how clean the thread is i guess. Hth

These bolts are only small diameter (take a 10mm AF spanner if I remember right) and suprised you only sheared one tightening to 65Nm!!  However I should chuck your crank pulley bolts and replace with new as they will have been "stretched" by such a high torque and could well shear as a result in the future - a flying crank pulley will do a lot of damage.  Tighten to the correct torque - 20Nm - or tighten by hand using a suitable ring spanner!

Just been to Vx and new crank pulley bolts and water pump bolts are £2.73 retail inc VAT so ordered them.

Better to be safe than sorry!!! :y
