Title: Link to TD thermostat how to on net?
Post by: Arrolman on 23 January 2009, 14:20:34
Hi,

Having a nightmare trying to get to my TD thermostat, 2 pipes running across it, fan is solid and bolts are rusted away ::). Someone kindly posted a link up to a how 2 on the internet but can't find it now, can anyone help?

Cheers,
Iain

think you mean the egr pipe is one but cant think of the other? unless you mean the water pipe that goes around there? anyway easist way is to unbolt the egr pipe and lift it to get to the bolts holding the statm if you cant get the bottom one from on top of the car you can get it from underneath by reaching up ten mm bolts if i remember correctly and thermostat housing is plastic i think so dont overtighten them!!! :y

I changed mine last week. Removed the black air box that runs left to right across the front of the engine and is connected to the inlet. Disconnected the egr pipe at the top end and the middle support to gain a little more access to the top bolt. I then removed the large rubber hose that connects the air filter box to the turbo and this let me get to the two bottom bolts from the drivers side with a cranked combination spanner. Didnt bother removing the hose that goes on the thermostat housing, just bent it to the side to remove stat. Make sure the "o" ring is seated correctly when you replace it and as mentioned don't go mad when you tighten the bolts. Didn't take very long to do. Hope this helps :) :y

fan is left hand thread.  rather stupid idea, having viscous fans. Crazy.

egr is 4 13mm bolts and a clip (possibly ::)) near top, but don't recall having to remove that.

Coolant pipe, I didn't have to remove, though TIS says you do.

3 x 10mm bolts hold stat housing in.  redo to 20Nm (from memory - check!)

Hi guys,

Cheers for the tips, giving myself all day tomorrow to do the stat and clean out the rad/block/heater matrix, rear brakes and shocks done today, what a difference when the handbrake doesn't bind anymore :D

Cheers,
Iain
