Title: Engine Issues, not entirely sure what though!
Post by: rastamanblues on 25 January 2009, 21:17:25
Hey all,

Basically had to get the Omega recovered on a flat bed last week :(

Drove down to a site in the morning, completly fine no problems what so ever.

As I leave the sight in the evening, there was a strange noise, to start with it sounded like a TDCi/Transit was really close behind me (I could hear that diesel clatter)

At a roundabout I then realised it could be me, so blipped the throttle and indeed something didnt sound right.

So pulled over in a nearby layby, and lifted the hood, it sounds like something inside the engine has come loose and is rattling round :(

Also doesnt sound like a V6 should?

Any ideas? The AA couldnt really say what it was, but didnt advise I drive it anywhere, and arranged for a low loader to pick me up.

Strange thing is theres no engine lights/warning lights what so ever on the dash, it hasnt gone through any oil or water, and there has been no knocking/noises previously.

Its a 3 litre V6.

Belt and tensioners were done in 06.

Thing is it still starts up fine, so if the belt had gone surely it wouldnt even do that?

slip the 'fan belt' off and see if that makes a difference. If so, then it's 'only' an auxillary - alternator, water pump, air con pump & errr?
If not ......  :-/

Well I drove one yesterday that sounded like a diesel but seemed to be firing on only 3 cylinders :( but then the EML was on...

Another time Mr Mark DTM was called when again it sounded like there was something loose inside the engine, there wasn't. But turned out to be crap in the servo pipe :-?

Mileage has been about 18-20k since then, no engine lights warning lights nothing.

Will try taking the 'fan belt' off and see what that does.

Hmmm doesnt help that Im not that mechanical :(

Im not saying it's definately the cambelt but my fathers MV6 started but sounded like a diesel, this is what I found

I noticed after a short journey yesterday in my V6 the same sort of noise. I wouldn't say it sounded like a deisel but almost like a squeaky rattle coming from the top/front of the head. I recently had my Timing belt done so unless it's been a shady job...  :-/

What I think it might be, for me anyway, is the fan belt like in the previous thread. My engine bay was cleaned and then covered in WD40 (they do that after a service out here) so I think the belts are sqeaking. I'm going to try remove the fan belt to see if the noise dissapears.

If you try it let is know of your findings.
