Title: Been offered a 2.5TD - what to look for?
Post by: philhoward on 18 January 2009, 09:28:48
I've not been following TD threads all that much (having a 2.0..), but been offered a N reg 2.5TD CDX Auto for silly money (£300).  Did a 50 yard drive in it (no tax) just to see.

What I do know:
Speedo doesn't work (although the ABS light is fine - as i assume its not the ECU?)
Done 90k - so budget to have a spare box in reserve..
On cold startup it fires up quick enough, but has a couple of little "hiccups" for the first few seconds; possibly a glow plug on its way out, or air leak?  Sounds well enough apart from that.
Seems to be a little "urgent" with the throttle (or is that just because i've got a 2.0??)
Drivers door doesn't lock with the Central Locking (siezed actuator?)

One owner since 1997 (only the second) and it came in as a part chop to a mate of mine.  No service history.

Worth a punt?  Any quick checks i'd need to do?

If you do buy it, I have a set of clocks with working speedo from the diesel I broke for spares.  :y

pre mini facelift abs units are generally very reliable, unlike the later ones.

A slight 'hunting' on initial startup could be glow plugs (easy) or leaking injector.

Being turbo'd, its nothing, nothing, nothing, everything at 2k rpm.  Chipping (worthwhile) makes this a little worse ::)

Try starting it when cold, hot, and 20mins after a run, ensure it starts on the button each time.

Looks like it might be back up for sale - the chap who was going to have it has been tempted by a Jag XJ40 instead...and i've got first refusal if he changes his mind

Whats the best way forward?  AR35 and a chip?

got to be done!!! mind you try it as a standard car for a few weeks to see how it is, then chip it and see how good it could have been if vauxhall hadnt shot themselves in the foot by detuning it to save a couple of quid  :y

Nowt to do with Vx......the info I was fed (from Rosselheim) was that part of the deal with BMW meant that it had to be lower on power than the same (competitor) 5 series....

Got to agree Mark. This policy sounds about right!

sounds feasible but its generally believed to be detuned so they could fit the cheaper ar 25 gbox and make more profit per unit cost :y
