I apologize in advance for this guys as ive seen posts about it recently, but just want some quick advice. Mine is a 2.5v6 auto and has 125k on the clock. I cant see anything in the history that I have got about it having had the auto fluid changed and ,if it hasnt , by all accounts I need to get it done, but are there any telltale signs that it might need doing and how much would I be looking at to have someone change it? Seem to recall someone saying it was about £100 but this seems a bit dear, or is it?

Don`t wait for tell-tale signs. With that mileage it needs to be done along with the filter. Look in the maintenance guides. Easy enough just a bit messy :y

what tell tell signs have you had, just out of interest as mine is playing up intermittently.

£100 isnt much realistically due to the cost of ATF and gaskets.
IIRC Fluid is ~£6 a litre upwards and needs ~7 litres so thats £40+ there + Gaskets + Labour

To be honest Ive not noticed anything untoward in the gearbox and wasnt until I saw a couple of posts on ATF changes that I even thought about it (tho if i HAD thought about it, at 125k I guess its obvious, after all, I get the engine oil and filter changed regularly). I mean, it may well have been changed before I got it and, whilst I appreciate its far better to prevent than cure, having just spent nearly £500 on the mig in past 2 months , dont really want to spend more at the momment unless I have to!

One way of finding out if you need to replace the ATF is to jack up drivers side, locate filler plug on the box, undo the plug until some oil starts leaking out ( don't overdo it as you will end up having an ATF bath ;D) catch it in a container and have alook at it - if its like black treacle it will need replacing - if its red it's ok (just top it up as per maintenance guide).
If you do have to replace the ATF you can save money by using liquid gaskets and cleaning the filter (so says haynes).

I would replace it anyway. My 2002 handbook (I think) specifies replacement every 60k, which I think is sensible. More so if the car is used for towing.
No there is no emptying plug. Need to drain from the filler and then remove the sumps.

make sure you wear clothes you dont want to wear again, you wont get the stink of atf out & it aint nice :P :P

is very usefull for both emptying and refilling .... :)
..except for the small sump which will be full to the top. What makes it more tricky is that the sumps don't just drop off after undoing the bolts - the gaskets inevitably need some freeing off..

Pete's top tip - instead of cleaning the drive, add more oil/ ATF/ brake fluid (delete as aplicable) and coat the entire drive liberally, ensuring you get an even covering... :y

And filter if you change it which was around £60 a couple of years ago unless you can get it on Trade club??? :-/

Thanks for the tips guys, will check colour/consistency first if I can, and take it from there. Seems too much of a fun job to miss out on (not!) :y
