Title: EML and fault codes appeared..
Post by: Freypal on 30 January 2009, 16:57:05
I found a long thread on this but this seems a bit different so apologies if it seems like covering old ground...

Took the car for a good long drive today over the welsh mountain roads.. quite a hard drive in fact. It was all brilliant until it got back to the city when the EML came on. Fault code pedal trick brought up 3 codes..

0420 0430 and 0704.

I find it quite unlikely that two cats are going to have suddenly given up the ghost together like this... Reading some suggests that the coolant temp sensor can be to blame. When i parked the car the engine temp gauge went crazy, sending the needle to over 100... which it clearly wasn't as it had been running no hotter than 95 even when giving the engine a good workover.

The car is running fine.. idling fine.. revs freely and doesn't seem down on power.

If it was just the one bank i would assume it was either a single cat or single lambda sensor gone but two at once... seems the problem must be pre-inlet or somewhere else.

I hope my logic makes sense!  ;D

Cheers!  :)

Hmm my bad, didn't see the one on this very page!

Gonna test the CTS now anyhow and see what that brings up.

the 0420 and 0430 are very common on 3.2's and ultimately nothing to worry about - its the pre cat having lost some efficiency.   Mine and many others 3.2's are the same.

Not sure about the 0704 though.
