My car failed its Mot on the emissions test, so the garage advised me to put in some Redex and take the car for a drive to hopefully sort out the emissions. Came back they fitted a new mid section and back box to the exhuast (£400! :'( ) and it then passed the MOT.
But.........since then ive noticed the engine seems to run rougher and my MPG are now pretty poor (between 24-26mpg when it used to be 27-30 mpg) a friend said it was something to do with the Redex removing the cardon from the engine. Just wondering if anyone else has trouble after using these typesof products? :y

I'm assuming that you have a petrol-powered job.
I'd say that your consumption figures are pretty normal, especially with it being an auto.
How are you calculating your MPG?
-
yeah its a 2.2 petrol auto, im just going by what its shows as my mpg on the trip computer

Hmmmm, just thinking - is the car performing the same as before the Redex treatment?
And what make exhaust was fitted - I'd imagine that at this price it was a genuine Vx system.
-
No its performing slightly worse than before the Redex, like i say my mate said something about it removing the cardon from the engine. im not sure if the exhaust is a Vx part as i had it fitted at euromaster, seems to be just a cheap (looking) exhaust, plus its rattling like hell so it could not be fitted properly, would a badly fitted exhuast affect the MPG?

I've found that the only accurate way of checking, is to fill the tank to the brim, and run it around. Then similarly refil and work it out from there.
As an aside, my old Carlton 2.0 CDX averaged 27/28mpg locally, (pretty good I thought), though the computer showed significantly higher consumption.

'PM' me with your phone number - something's not right here.
-
ive tried working out mpg before but never seem to get it right lol
im hoping once ive refilled the tank a few times that could flush out the redex from the system, never trusted these addative things and wat they clam, wish id not used the stuff now.
-
Someone correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the removal of carbon only really a problem with tired old engines where the build up created a better seal. On a new/modern engine i can't see it affecting it.
-
They did a test on fith gear before showing that things like redex reduce performance by up to 5 % :o
-
Not disagreeing with the foregoing posts, but I reckon the replacement exhaust is certainly not helping here.
Regarding the Redex, the 'original' variety is, I reckon, nowadays all but redundant. Modern fuels and oils have additives which prevent excessive carbon build-ups. More likely that Redex injector cleaner was used as an aid to reducing the emission level for the MoT.

i agree with you. It would not be the first time that someone has botched a 2.0 onto a 2.2 either. Next step would be to inspect the exhaust - check the make and part number and confirm it is right for the vehicle. If i am correct the 2.2 has two mid sections not 1 (the 2.0 has one) - the original post talks about a new mid section and end....

My thoughts exactly Jon.
I'm thinking that the replacement exhaust is either cheapo or the incorrect spec for a 2.2, and therefore restricting the gas flow.
The same 'experts' tried to give me some crap boll**s a while ago regarding wheel camber. The work was that bad that I refused point blank to pay-up.
I note that our fellow OOF-er has been charged top whack, so I'd be back there pretty sharpish - and looking for compensation too!
-
thanks for the replys folks, i guess a dodgy exhuast replacement can affect the cars performance then? its rattling really badly when im stopped in traiffc and have the car in "drive" , sounds like its either hitting the bodywork somewhere or its loose. I guess its a trip back to the garage when i get a chance for them to re-do a bad job ::)
-
ok but before you go backto them, get your info together. If not you'll be fobbed off
first, have a nosey under the car, look at the manufacturers name on the exhaust and pick off the part numbers: ususally they are stamped into the metal so easy to read. Then have a google around to see the manufacturers catalogue: check whether the parts fitted are applicable to your vehicle. If they are not then your case is completely clear.
also check your invoice, this should specify the parts (scan it and post here???)
If they are the right parts, they are fitted badly - again complain is in order
Remeber the 2.2. should have two mid boxes and one back
for £400 you could buy a full VX exhaust for a V6 so you've paid top whack!
-
ok found my invoice for the exhaust here the parts and numbers
EXHAUST PART GM441D.................£120
EXHAUST PART GM442C.................£120
EXHAUST PART GM443B.................£100
-
looks like the right parts according to here
http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/
but their price is about £150 all in!
have a nosey under the car to check the parts fitted: two mid sections and one back. then its back to ATS
-
Looks like i got RIPPED OFF BIG TIME! >:(
-
well you need not be.
first, make sure they fitted what they charged you for: failure to do so means money back 'cos you threaten trading standards
Second if it is not fitted properly and they passed the MOT on it ANd they should not then you can take it to be assessed (research this) again this threatens their ability to do MOT.
Arm yourself with more info than they have and you will win.
I'm still guessing they bodged a 2.0 system on then (one mid box and one back.....
-
theres a 2 year warrenty on it so it shall be going back for them to sort, i was warned about ATS Euromatsers before but it was a different garage, time to find somewhere different i think

These may well be the correct part numbers for your 2.2.
But were they the parts that were actually fitted to yours?
It's time you found another garage - try GT Motors up here in Maesteg. It's a long-established and RMI-approved family business. I've dealt with them for years with no complaints - lovely people with long-serving mechanics - that says it all for me .... ! MoTs too.
I'll price-up the job with them later on and let you know.

The warranty is irrelevant. the sale of goods act is relevant. Even if there is not warranty, their goods have to be fit for purpose and work needsto be carried out competently: it sounds like it has not
as Sethsmate says, please check they have fitted the correct parts - look underneath your car: take some piccies for us
-
ok cheers, i'll see what i can do in the next hour or two as far as pics go. dont have access to a ramp or pit so might be a bit difficult but i'll have a look underneath and see what i can see.
Also wheres GT motors located? im from Caerau orinally but never used any garages in maesteg

Right, priced-up the parts and fitting:
The three exhaust sections for your 2.2 came to £223.25.
Fitting cost would be £30-ish as long as no problems encountered.
This would be for a good-quality Walker system with a 2-year guarantee.
Total price is just under £260 all-in - there you have it!
Will send you a 'PM'
