Hi all,
Ok now here`s what will probly soundlike a really stupid question(feel free to laugh at any point), aux belt has just given up the ghost and i`m just getting the new one, is there any way of routing the the blighter back on without taking off the what i assume is the aircon belt??? i know it sounds daft but its about to get reeeely cold and dark and i`m badly in need of short cuts!!!!! cheers guys in advance!!!
-
the aircon belt IS the aux belt
-
OOPS! Shows how much i know then...ha ha. Well whatever the other smaller belt is - does it need to come off first? - not looking forward to another 3-4 hour stint on me back in the snow!!

I have never worked on or looked properly under the bonnet of a staright 6 diesel, What type of belt(s) are fitted? Olde style 'V' belts or more modern polly vee belt? If there are 2 or 3 pulleys on your crank shaft pulley and a corresponding pulley on alternator, power steering etc then you're going to need to remove the outer belts first.
ngraingey is talking about V6's where we have a 'Serpentine' pollyvee belt that weaves its way around the lot and is about 8' long
-
if yours has a small belt on the bottom drivers side then this is the AC belt and will need to come off first
-
Yep thats the one! Is is much of a job? It looks awkward and next to no room? Think i can get away with leaving the fan on, is it just a matter of loosening tha air-con pump and slipping the belt off, or am i over-simplifying??
-
you should be able to slacken of the tensioner (small pulley at the bottom between the crankshaft and AC) then slip it off
-
Nice one - i`ll give it a bash first thing in the morning - watch this space..... :y
-
Excuse my ignorance again guys, but i cant see any bolts that would release this tensioner - the pulley seems to be part of the main block with the pump bolted to the side of that??? any ideas? God I wish i`d stuck with Meccano!!!!! :'( :'(
-
TheBoy could be the person to ask about this as i think he's got a TD and has done quite a bit of work on it!
-
not to sure but i think the aircon belt tensioner is a hex(allenkey bolt) to slacken/ tighten
-
Send me a 'PM' with your email address.
I'll attach a guide for refitting so you can see for yourself.
-
A/C belt has to come off. See the little tensioner? pop the plastic cover, and there is a 13mm (from memory) bolt behind to slacken.
You'll also have to remove that gay viscous fan - left hand thread, will be a pig.
To releive pressure on main aux belt, don't be tempted to use a pry bar, unless you have a spare tensioner - undo the bolts at top end of tensioner (on black metal bracket).
-
Nice one guys, thanks for all your help - that tensioner was a piece of pi** once i knew what to look for!! managed to leave the fan on and route the belt around it, she`s all back together now thank god!!
Only 2 little little niggles now - then i`ll feel safe on the road.
For some reason the battery light is on permenantly and the battery discharged in about 15min. it fires 1st time with jump leads, I changed the starter not long ago, and had the alternator bench tested all seemed fine, i just cant help thinkin ive messed up somewhere on the connections....... :-[
-
Stating the obvious here ........ are you sure that the belt's actually around the alternator pulley?
And, have you disturbed/disconnected any of the earth cables?
-
He he... yes mate belt is fitted fine - since last message had a mobile autospark test the leccy system and guess what? he said that the alternator is shagged!!! how come this wasnt picked up when it was bench tested now i`ll have to do half the job all over again, is there a garage bloody any bloody where that can be trusted/believed/relied on any bloody where???? not to mention the hundred -odd quid for a recon. ggrrr >:( >:( >:(

Are you sure the earth leads haven't been disturbed/disconnected?
As a final check, (as you can't trust any tinker!), try securely clamping a jump lead from anywhere convenient on the engine block to the negative post on the battery.
Start the engine and see what happens.
If the light goes out - voila - you've got duff earthing.
If the light stays on, well, open your wallet ...... !
