Title: Newbie owner...big problem please help.electrics?
Post by: ianph on 13 February 2009, 09:13:51

Hi,

This is my first post on this site and i have barely owned my auto 2.0gls omega for a week and i think i have caused a self inflicted problem....

I was trying to sort out my car radio and all of a sudden the speedo started going mad jerking up and down and there were a few noises coming from under the bonnet.(car wasnt running).I tried to start it but no luck.

I ripped the radio out and it seemed fine.It wasnt until i drove home that i noticed the car is maxing out at 4500rpm while driving and while revving in neutral.

Does anyone know what i could have done? I know its likely to be something electrical but thats as far as it goes.Want to exhaust all my options before calling a diagnostics expert out!

Thanks so much in advance for any advice given.

dis connect the battery for 20 mins, see if it re sets anything...? if you do this you will need to reset windows(hold button in up position when closed) and sun roof(press the hold the dial in each position, open first then closed then tilt)

Always dis con the battery when working on the car anyway, its good practice, and a pain in the arse, but saves situations like this.

Oh, and yours  will need the radio code as well.

Nope. Can you describe the "noises" you heard from under the bonnet :question. Has the EML came on at all on the dash :question

As the speedo was going crazy, shortly pushing the radio back in the slot,it was like a whirring sound under the bonnet.I then tried to start the motor....wouldnt start.Disconnected the radio and the car started fine and i thought all was ok...until i drove it home from work and found the revving problem.

All was defo ok before this as i had given it a bit of a thrash to make sure all was ok.

Which dash light is supposed to flash while doing the paperclip? Nothing on mine at all.

Orange one with engine symbol. Ignition on, engine NOT running

Ok,tried the paper clip again and nothing at all.In fact the only orange light coming up when ignition is turned on is the abs light.(even without paperclip.

Have noticed when paperclip is in the rpm needle starts moving of its own accord.

Cant believe mucking around with a radio could have caused this???

Trying my best to diagnose/fix this myself as im skint after buying the motor!

ok so start this methodically.

when you turn the ingintion on you should get three lights: ABS, airbag and engine warning light.  If they all do not come on then the bulbs are broken or deliberately removed.

Step 1 - get new bulbs in: not too bad really, just need to instrument panel out - should be a how to on here

step 2 - flash out the codes and post here/ find out what they are

Step 3 - await the oracles on there to point you in the right direction.

all of the above should cost you a pound or two for bulbs

Ok thanks for that Johnathan.

Could anyone recommend any sites to buy these parts from or generally any other websites for help, parts etc?

well the bulbs are typical twist fit panel bulbs - Halfords or anywhere like that really.  they are really common.  don't spend money you do not have on replacing parts that might be suspect, do the paperclip test first

Actually, if you really want to save your pennies, pop the instrument panel out and swap a known good bulb from another light into the engine warning light as a temp bodge

p.s. where are you? update your profile someone may be near to help

Ok i got the dash off and the EMS bulb was missing(ominous).
Swapped bulb and got it working.

Did the paperclip test(i presume its a 4 digit code as it went straight to test codes).Got the following fault codes:

10-3-3-5
1-6-9-10
10-1-10-10
10-3-4-10
10-3-5-1

It then started repeating itself. This is the first paperclip test ive done so please forgive any errors.Dreading the results but could someone please be so kind to translate them for me?

Thanks.

0335 Engine not running
1690 Faulty Lamp
0100 MAF
0340 Cam Sensor
0351 Coil Pack - 1 & 4

Suggest check plugs - expect full of oil, or worn out
Definately Cam sensor

0335 because it was off
MAF may clear
1690 is now fixed

Coil warning is usually plugs or leads on way out.

Could be leaking cam cover onto plugs, or knackered plugs

Thanks for that.

For some reason after i had done the paperclip and put the dash back the EMS light is intermittent. If the light stays on the car will run lumpy and max out at 4500rpm but quite oten the EMS light will stay of and it runs like a dream.???

Could this be a problem with the ECU aswell as thefault code problems?

Any suggestions of best places and which brand etc of parts that i need?

Thanks very much.

very unlikely to be ECU problem itself.  It sounds like the previous owner had a minor fault (cam sensor???) and took the bulb out to cover up.

your eml light sometimes coming on and then not others suggests a flakey cam sensor.  first take it out and clean it + inspect wiring.  Next step would be: replace cam sensor with VX part.  I'm not sure about pattern parts sorry.

ansl you can clear stored fault codes by  turning the ignition on and off for 30 times.  No need to start but you do need to wait until the start sequence for the ECU completes (i.e. the engine light goes out).  Then start up and run.  If the EML light is on, repeat paperclip test and address the fault code stored.

Only replace known faulty parts: that's the cheapest way of doing things.

Right,

I have cleaned the contacts on the cam sensor and for now, when motor is started the eml light stays out(fingers crossed it stays that way.)

Before starting up though, the eml light does stay on,indicating there are still other faults???

Do you suggest i try and clear any old faults using the 30 turn technique and then run another paperclip test?

By the way, thanks so much for all the help given so far its been a godsend!
