Title: Speedo swappable or whole clocks?
Post by: philhoward on 20 February 2009, 22:44:56
Pretty much as it says - can just the speedo be swapped with some dismantling, or do you need to swap the whole unit as one?  Also...are the speedo units set to each engine/axle combo or do they all read the same?

Might be able to get a 3.0 Manual speedo (ex-plod, so calibrated) and wondered if it'll fit the 2.5TD Auto pack...and work!

Ex Plod go up to 150 on the speedo, I think the TD one go up to 140?
The rev counter and speedo is one complete unit and can be swapped between units.

Bugger..as the TD tacho doesn't go as high..but would it still read correct?

Not that i'd ever get to 150mph in a TD (chipped or not), just there may be one (or even 2..) going for peanuts I know of...

Need to clarify that with TB or MDTM, not sure if it would need coding or not, i'm guessing not as the speedo drive signal is from the rear ABS sensor IIRC.

Going to swap mine as the rev counter is 'sticky' and not reading correctly. If you can get hold of two replacements for peanuts then i'd be interested in buying one off you to see if I can dismantle one enough to see what repairs are possible.

whats the gain?

rev counter will read 'dangle berries' btw, and I reckon the speedo will as well.

Do even the tacho's have the same range? There's a difference in range between SWMBO's petrol Astra & my TD Astra tacho's, my clocks fitted her car and gave a reading, but not the correct reading. Her speedo is ABS driven and mine is (electrically) gearbox driven.
